Aurora, Colo., Jul 20, 2012 \/ 08:38 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- In his homily following a July 20 mass shooting in Aurora, Colo., Denver Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila reminded a crowd of faithful that though there is evil in the world, there is also mercy.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cSin, evil and death do not have the last word,\u201d he said, citing Jesus\u2019 victory over death through his resurrection.<\/p>\n

\tThe Mass was held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church \u2013 just blocks from Century 16 Theatre \u2013 where 12 people were killed and at least 59 were injured when a gunman opened fire at a midnight showing of the Batman movie \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe newly-installed archbishop warned Catholics against responding to the violence with vengeance.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThat is not the way of Jesus Christ,\u201d he said. \u201cWe must be peacemakers. We are called to love as Christ loved and commit ourselves to peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tParishioner Juliet Younger said her daughter Jo Ann spent the hours leading up to the Mass at University Hospital in Denver where five of her friends are being treated for injuries. Jo Ann said one of them remains in critical condition.<\/p>\n

\tThey said they came to the Mass to find peace.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAnd hopefully understand \u2018why,\u2019\u201d Juliet said, with tears in her eyes. \u201cI don\u2019t understand this. Why go there and kill those people? Why?\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe archbishop said people like the Youngers can take hope from the fact that God is present in their suffering.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWhat occurred \u2026 was an encounter with evil, an encounter with violence,\u201d he said. \u201cCertainly the love of the Father is stronger than the bullets that killed 12 and wounded (many more).\u201d<\/p>\n

\tNearly two dozen priests concelebrated the Mass with the archbishop.<\/p>\n
