Vatican City, Apr 12, 2014 \/ 12:54 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- At a meeting with Italy\u2019s Pro-Life Movement, Pope Francis thanked members for their work to defend the right to life and promote the dignity of all human beings, from conception to natural death.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cHuman life is sacred and inviolable. Every civil law is based on the recognition of the first and fundamental right, that of life, which is not subordinate to any condition, neither qualitative nor economic, much less ideological,\u201d the Roman Pontiff said March 11.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThank you for your witness of promoting and defending human life from the moment of conception!\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe Holy Father\u2019s words came in a meeting with Movimento per la Vita, an association of more than 600 local Italian movements. He greeted in particular the movement\u2019s president, Carlo Casini, who is also a member of the European Parliament, where he represents the Union of Christian and Centre Democrats party.<\/p>\n

\tPope Francis thanked the organization particularly for two of its initiatives. The first is the Gemma Project, which \u201cthrough a particular form of practical solidarity\u201d \u2013 the adoption of children while still in the womb \u2013 has made possible \u201cthe birth of many babies who would otherwise have not seen the light.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe second is \u201cOne of Us,\u201d a European Union citizens\u2019 initiative to ban the funding of policies that destroy human embryos.<\/p>\n

\tPope Francis emphasized the importance of opposing an \u201ceconomy of exclusion,\u201d saying \u201cthe divorce between economics and morality\u201d is \u201cone of the most grave risks facing our age.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThis divorce, he explained, leads to \u201ca market which gives us every technological innovation\u201d but renders the \u201celementary ethical norms of human nature \u2026 always more neglected.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIt is therefore necessary to reiterate the strongest opposition to any direct attack on life, especially innocent and defenseless life, and the unborn child in the womb is the archetype (antonomasia) of innocence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHe quoted Vatican II's pastoral constitution on the Church in the modern world, \u201cGaudium et spes,\u201d which said that \u201cfrom the moment of its conception life must be guarded with the greatest care while abortion and infanticide are unspeakable crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThis is always part of a Christian\u2019s competence in bearing witness to the gospel: to protect life with courage and love in all its phases.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cI encourage you to act always with a style of nearness, of closeness: that every woman feels regarded as a person, who is heard, accepted, accompanied,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\tPope Francis concluded by entrusting the movement\u2019s members to the intercession of Mary and giving them his blessing.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cRemember to pray also for me!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
