Vatican City, Apr 12, 2014 \/ 09:49 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- In his audience with surgeons who treat cancer patients, Pope Francis encouraged the physicians to view the person as an integral whole of body and soul.<\/p>\n

\tOn April 12, the Holy Father spoke of the need for \u201ccomprehensive care that considers the whole person and unites also human, psychological and social support, spiritual accompaniment, and support for the family of the sick person to medical care.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHis audience in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace with participants in a conference of the Society of Italian Oncology Surgeons focused on the importance of integral care.<\/p>\n

\tWhile \u201cscientific research has multiplied the possibilities of prevention and healing,\u201d it is important to speak of \u201cfull health\u201d which includes a vision of the \u201chuman person, created in the image of God, and who is unity of body and spirit,\u201d explained the pontiff.<\/p>\n

\tHe went on to note that \u201cthese two elements cannot be separated, because the person is one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tWhen a man or woman undergoes suffering, it \u201cnot only affects the bodily dimension\u201d of the person, but the person \u201cin his totality,\u201d and therefore he or she must receive care in an integrated manner.<\/p>\n

\tDoctors commit to a \u201chigh value\u201d in searching for cures, \u201cin order to respond to the expectations and hopes of many patients around the world,\u201d the Pope acknowledged.<\/p>\n

\tYet it is a \u201cfraternal sharing with the sick\u201d that \u201copens us to the true beauty of human life, which includes even its fragility, so that we can recognize the dignity and worth of every human being, in whatever condition he is found, from conception to death.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tMoreover, as the Church begins to celebrate Holy Week, the recollection of the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ reminds us that \u201cthe suffering of humanity is taken up all the way and redeemed by God. By God-Love,\u201d said the pontiff.<\/p>\n

\tHe then referenced the famous Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky\u2019s \u201canguished query,\u201d that is, \u201cwhy do children suffer?\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cOnly Christ can give meaning to this \u2018scandal,\u2019\u201d the Holy Father insisted. \u201cOnly Christ gives meaning to the scandal of innocent suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cYou too can look to Him, crucified and resurrected, in your daily work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tPope Francis had begun his brief address by welcoming the surgeons and praying for the men and women under their care. He concluded by asking that Mary help sustain the doctors in \u201ctheir work of research and action.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAt the feet of Jesus\u2019s Cross we also meet Our Lady of Sorrows. She is the Mother of all humanity, and she is always close to her sick and suffering children. If our faith wavers, hers does not,\u201d he explained. \u201cI pray the Lord to bless you all.\u201d<\/p>\n
