Philadelphia, Pa., Apr 14, 2014 \/ 11:01 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Ahead of the Jewish observance of Passover, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput has written to Philadelphia\u2019s Jewish community to extend \u201cthe prayerful best wishes\u201d of the Catholics of his archdiocese.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWe Catholics, who owe so much to the Jewish roots of our faith, join you in revering this great feast,\u201d Archbishop Chaput said in an April 14 message.<\/p>\n

\tThe archbishop called Passover \u201cthe great feast that marks the liberation of the Chosen People from slavery.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHe said that the Passover celebrations \u201cdo not simply recall the past.\u201d Rather, the observance\u2019s rituals are \u201cliving reminders that in all times and places, God calls his people to a deeper personal commitment to promote justice in a troubled world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cOur times are challenging, and it can be easy to fear that evil may triumph,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\tBut the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, he said, \u201creminds us once again that under heavenly guidance, genuine freedom can never be extinguished.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe eight-day Passover observance begins at sundown April 14. Its observances include Seder meals during which participants retell the story of the Exodus.<\/p>\n
