CNA<\/a>).- On the feast of Pentecost, Pope Francis focused his homily and Angelus address on the work of the Holy Spirit in guiding and giving life to the Church.<\/p>\n\tThe first Pentecost \u201cdoes not remain only limited to that moment, but is an event that is renewed and renews itself again. Christ, glorified at the right (hand) of the Father, continues to realize his promise, sending the Holy Spirit to enliven the Church who teaches us, reminds us, and makes us speak,\u201d the Pope preached to the congregation at mass in St. Peter\u2019s Basilica on June 8.<\/p>\n
\tThe Holy Spirit is the \u201cinterior Teacher,\u201d explained the pontiff, guiding us \u201calong the right path, throughout the situations of life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cIn the early days of the Church, Christianity was called \u2018the way\u2019, and Jesus himself is the way. The Holy Spirit teaches us to follow him, to walk in his footsteps. More than a teacher of doctrine, the Spirit is a teacher of life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tPope Francis noted that the work of the Spirit is something \u201cwe have all experienced\u201d \u2013 for example, in reading Scripture, when we are drawn to one passage after another and feel Christ speaking to us.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cThe Spirit of truth and charity reminds us of all that Christ has said, makes us enter more fully into the sense of his words.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tThis \u2018reminding\u2019 helps Christians remain fully in the Church, for \u201ca Christian without memory is not a true Christian,\u201d he stressed. Rather he or she is a \u201cprisoner of the moment, who doesn\u2019t know the treasures of his history, doesn\u2019t know to read it and live it like the story of salvation.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tThe Holy Spirit gives us \u201cthe wisdom of memory,\u201d which grows in us through prayer, another gift of the Spirit that allows us \u201cto call God father \u2013 and this is not just a \u2018figure of speech,\u2019 but is the reality,\u201d Pope Francis emphasized.<\/p>\n
\tIt is not only the speech of prayer that the Holy Spirit gives us, however, but also \u201cfraternal dialogue\u201d and \u201cprophecy,\u201d helping us to \u201cspeak with friendship, with tenderness,\u201d as \u201chumble and docile \u2018channels,\u2019 for the word of God.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tIt was this power of the Holy Spirit that allowed the apostles to be heard in many different languages on that first Pentecost, explained Pope Francis later in his Angelus remarks.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cThe book of Acts describes the signs and fruits of that extraordinary outpouring: the strong wind and the flames of fire; the fear disappears and gives way courage; tongues are loosened and everyone understands the announcement,\u201d he recounted to the crowds filling St. Peter\u2019s Square at noon on Sunday.<\/p>\n
\tPentecost marks the \u201cbirth of the Church,\u201d the Pope noted, which has two aspects: \u201ca Church that surprises, and that makes a mess.\u201d<\/p>\n
\t\u201cOur God is a God of surprises, we know this,\u201d he exclaimed.<\/p>\n
\tThe descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost \u201cinspires awe because with the strength that comes from God, (the disciples) announce a new message \u2013 the Resurrection of Christ \u2013 with a new language \u2013 universal love.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tAlthough Jesus\u2019 disciples had been gathered together in fear, at the Holy Spirit\u2019s coming they are empowered to \u201cspeak with courage\u2026and frankness, with the freedom of the Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tPope Francis then emphasized that the Holy Spirit leads Christians \u201cinto the world\u201d to proclaim the gospel, even if at times it can be an uncomfortable truth for people.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cThe Church of Pentecost is a Church that is not resigned to being innocuous,\u201d or just a \u201cdecorative element\u201d in the world, he insisted.<\/p>\n
\tRather, \u201cthe Church does not hesitate to come out, meet the people, to proclaim the message that has been entrusted to it, even if that message disturbs and worries consciences.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tThe message, however, is a message of love, which \u201cembraces the world\u201d not to \u201ccapture\u201d it but rather to \u201creceive\u201d it.<\/p>\n
\tAfter leading the faithful in the Easter-time Marian prayer of the Regina Coeli, Pope Francis greeted the pilgrims who had journeyed to the Vatican and then asked for special prayers for this evening\u2019s prayer event with the presidents of Israel and Palestine.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cAs you know, this evening in the Vatican the Presidents of Israel and Palestine will join me and the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, my brother Bartholomew, to ask God for the gift of peace on Holy Land, the Middle East and throughout the world. I wish to thank all those who personally and in the community have prayed and are praying for this meeting, and will join spiritually in our supplication.\u201d<\/p>\n
\tThe Pope closed with his customary wishes for a \u201cgood Sunday and a good lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n
