Vatican City, Jun 17, 2014 \/ 05:03 am (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- The spokesman for the Catholic Church in Amman, Jordan, has decried the continuous bloodshed in the Middle East, expressing his fear that refugees will develop an attitude of hatred and revenge.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe main point I think is to stop the bloodshed, and then I think we will start to talk about the re-construction of Syria, the re-construction of Iraq, but we have to stop the bloodshed,\u201d Fr. Rif\u2019at Bader told CNA June 16.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIt\u2019s really a shame on the Middle East and on the world\u201d to allow such violence to continue.<\/p>\n

\tPresent in Sarajevo, Bosnia for a June 16-17 conference addressing the theme \u201cThe Temptation of Violence: Religions between War and Reconciliation,\u201d Fr. Bader is the spokesman for the Catholic Church in Jordan as well as director of the country\u2019s Catholic Center for Studies and Media. He also played a key role in organizing the visit of Pope Francis last month.<\/p>\n

\tSpeaking of the current situation in the Middle East, Fr. Bader explained that \u201cRight now we have bloodshed in Iraq, in Syria and with these new stories of Daesh and Mosul,\u201d and that because of this, there is a great influx of refugees into Jordan who are fleeing the violence in their home countries.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cI don\u2019t say that we are suffering because of them, but we are suffering with them and for them because the situation is not easy in Syria, it\u2019s not easy in Iraq,\u201d he noted, explaining that there are currently 300,000 refugees in Amman, with 1,320,000 Syrians who have fled to Somal.<\/p>\n

\tHe explained that the number of refugees is concerning not because of financial, economic or water problems in Jordan, but rather because the camps are \u201cnot an institution of people but of families.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tOf particular concern are children, the priest said, who do not have access to proper education and who often suffer psychological trauma.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cThis is a bad situation especially for the children. Which future and which future generation will we have? I think they will grow up with the mentality of revenge, and of hatred.\"<\/p>\n

\tIn order to curb the development of this attitude, the spokesman explained that it in addition to providing for their temporal needs, it is important to remember that \u201cEverything is not in human hands,\u201d but that \u201cwe have to put everything in God\u2019s hands,\u201d as Pope Francis did last week in the Vatican Gardens when he prayed with the Jewish and Israeli people and the Muslim people.<\/p>\n

\tDrawing attention to how the Muslim Quran was read for the first time ever on Vatican grounds, Fr. Bader noted that \u201cthis is a good sign that we are doing our best as a Catholic Church, as Christians, to promote the values of justice, peace\u201d and \u201ccontribution for the common good.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cNo peace will be stable without justice, and no justice will be without forgiveness,\u201d he said, adding \u201cwill we have and will we see the horizon of peace build on justice and forgiveness? We have to pray to God to make this possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tRecalling the pontiff\u2019s visit to Jordan at the end of last month, Fr. Bader said, \u201cWe are blessed by his presence and \u201cproud that we are the only country that received four different popes in 50 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cIt was a strengthening for our faith and for our relations with our society, especially because with our co-citizens, the Muslims,\u201d he explained, adding that \u201cWe need bridge builders,\u201d and \u201cPope Francis is doing his best to increase this number of builders of bridges of collaboration, of unity, of harmony.\u201d<\/p>\n
