London, England, Jul 21, 2014 \/ 03:49 pm (CNA<\/a>).- Tony Palmer, a Protestant Christian leader and a close friend of Pope Francis, passed away in the U.K. on Sunday due to injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident.<\/p>\n

\tThe Order of the Ark Community, an internet-based Christian group overseen by Palmer, announced his July 20 death on its website.<\/p>\n

\tPalmer was born in the U.K. and grew up in South Africa. He was a member of the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches, which views itself as \u201cstanding with in the Celtic and Anglican traditions\u201d of Christianity.<\/p>\n

\tHe knew the Pope from his time in Argentina, when Bergoglio was Archbishop of Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n

\tPalmer recounted his friendship with Pope Francis at a February gathering of Pentecostal<\/a> leaders organized by the Texas-based Kenneth Copeland Ministries.<\/p>\n

\tPalmer said he considered the Pope to be one of his three \u201cspiritual fathers.\u201d The two studied together and met often.<\/p>\n

\tPalmer and Pope Francis had a meeting in mid-January during which they discussed Christian unity. Pope Francis suggested he record a video message on Palmer\u2019s phone, and the message was then presented at the Pentecostal gathering.<\/p>\n

\tIn the message, the Pope described Palmer as \u201cmy brother,\u201d saying the two have been \u201cfriends for years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWe have a lot of cultural riches and religious riches. And we have diverse traditions,\u201d the Pope told the Pentecostal gathering. \u201cBut we have to encounter one another as brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHe said that Christians had been separated by \u201csins\u201d and \u201cmisunderstandings throughout history,\u201d voicing his yearnings that the separation will end in communion.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cLet\u2019s give each other a spiritual embrace and let God complete the work that he has begun,\u201d Pope Francis said.<\/p>\n

\tPalmer had urged Protestant Evangelical leaders to sign the 1999 Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification signed by representatives of the Church and of the Lutheran World Federation. He thought the document \u201cbrought an end to the Protest\u201d of the Protestant Reformation.<\/p>\n
