Anaheim, Calif., Aug 7, 2012 \/ 07:24 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- As the world\u2019s largest Catholic fraternal organization, the Knights of Columbus must play a prominent role in evangelizing the contemporary world, said Bishop Tod D. Brown of Orange, Calif.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cCertainly, there is a clear and demanding need today for the New Evangelization,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

\tBishop Brown delivered his homily at the Aug. 7 opening Mass of the 130th Supreme Convention of the Knights of Columbus in Anaheim, Calif.<\/p>\n

\tThe convention drew approximately 2,000 participants from across the country and around the world, including 12 cardinals and more than 70 bishops, archbishops and abbots.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\tBishop Brown called to mind the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas.<\/p>\n

\tOur Lady has a special significance to the Knights, who renewed their dedication to her during their meeting. The Knights also co-sponsored an Aug. 5 Guadalupe Celebration with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which drew about 100,000 participants.<\/p>\n

\tThe bishop explained that Mary\u2019s appearance to St. Juan Diego as a woman of mixed race led millions to turn towards Christianity.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cShe embraces every culture, ethnic group, nationality and race,\u201d he said, and her message is still important for us today.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cNow, five centuries later, we have our own disturbing times,\u201d Bishop Brown noted, listing off the challenges presented by to the Church by \u201ca growing secularism, attacks on the value and the gift of human life, attempts to redefine traditional marriage and a serious curtailment of our religious rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThese threats emphasize the need for the New Evangelization in today\u2019s world, he said, adding that this New Evangelization \u201ccalls us to faith, instills hope and fills us with love.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cI\u2019m confident the members of our order will be in the front ranks of the evangelizers,\u201d the bishop said.<\/p>\n

\tPointing to St. Juan Diego\u2019s willingness to convey the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe, he stressed that \u201cthe success of the New Evangelization will depend on our laity and their involvement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAs laity, your lives will act as witness to our faith,\u201d he told the conference participants.<\/p>\n

\tIn working to do this, the faithful can confidently seek the support of Our Lady of Guadalupe, \u201cthe first evangelizer of our hemisphere,\u201d who five hundred years ago \u201copened the door of faith \u2026 and does so now,\u201d Bishop Brown said.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cMary said yes to God,\u201d he explained. \u201cOur job is to say yes to the New Evangelization.\u201d<\/p>\n
