Castel Gandolfo, Italy, Aug 15, 2012 \/ 01:02 pm (CNA\/EWTN News<\/a>).- Having been taken into heaven both spiritually and bodily, the Virgin Mary helps believers to grow in \u201cChristian hope\u201d during their earthly lives, Pope Benedict XVI taught on the Feast of the Assumption.

\n\tThe Pope celebrated Mass at Castel Gandolfo\u2019s parish church of St. Thomas of Villanova on the Aug. 15 solemnity. During his homily, he said Mary's intercession with God can \u201chelp us to live well and with hope the time that God gives to us\u201d on earth.
\n\t\u00a0
\n\tIn remarks reported by Vatican Radio, he noted that the virtue of Christian hope \u201cis not just nostalgia for Heaven,\u201d but a \u201cliving and active desire for God here in the world.\u201d That desire \u201cmakes us indefatigable pilgrims,\u201d providing \u201cthe courage and strength of faith\u201d through \u201cthe power of love.\u201d

\n\tThe Pope also observed that by entering the fullness of life with God, the Virgin Mary was not leaving behind the faithful on earth, but instead becoming closer to all.<\/p>\n

\tDogmatically defined in 1950, the assumption of the Virgin Mary's body and soul into heaven is a perennial part of the Church's faith, Pope Benedict told pilgrims who joined him to pray the Angelus at his summer residence later in the day.<\/p>\n

\tHe explained that Christ's mother, who was \u201credeemed from the first moment of her life,\u201d is \u201cassociated in a special way\u201d with the mystery of Christ's own life, death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven.<\/p>\n

\tMary's physical and spiritual entry into God's presence represents \u201cthe Paschal Mystery of Christ fully realized in her,\u201d as she is \u201cintimately united with her Son\u201d and \u201cfully conformed to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\u201cBut the Assumption is a reality that touches us too,\u201d the Pope reflected, pointing out that it shows \u201cthe reality of the glory\u201d to which God calls \u201ceach of us and the whole Church.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tAs Pope Benedict greeted pilgrims gathered in the courtyard of the Apostolic Palace for the mid-day Angelus on Wednesday, he expressed his desire that \u201cthe example and prayers of Mary, Queen of Heaven\u201d would \u201cinspire and sustain us on our pilgrimage of faith.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tUnder her protection, believers on earth may hope to \u201crejoice with her in the glory of the Resurrection and the fulfillment of her Son\u2019s promises.\u201d<\/p>\n
