We don\u2019t like to think about being caught.\u00a0 Most of our lives are spent saying, \u201cNot it.\u201d
\nWho wants to do dishes?\u00a0 Not it!
\nWho wants to rake the yard?\u00a0 Not it!<\/p>\n
Now grated, these questions weren\u2019t exactly open-ended.\u00a0 In the asking, lurked the presumption we were going to say, \u201cMe please!\u201d\u00a0 or at the very least, \u201cOkay\u2026\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0because these questions asked by parents were really commands. This needs doing.\u00a0 You\u2019re doing it.<\/p>\n
My own kids do not recognize this imparative.\u00a0 In fact, they use this same method against me.\u00a0 \u201cDo you want to take us to get ice cream?\u201d has been snagging me for years.\u00a0 \u201cCan you pick me up?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cCan a friend come over?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cCan we get go out?\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0Somehow the answer always seems something like yes.<\/p>\n
God understands this reality of love, that when asked, the lover desires to say \u201cyes.\u201d\u00a0 Parents want to say \u201cYes.\u201d to their children.\u00a0 God waits and longs for us to say \u201cYes\u201d to him.<\/p>\n
Since Easter, I\u2019ve felt like the disciples after Good Friday, wandering around waiting for something, but not sure what.\u00a0 \u00a0I keep listening to the daily mass, waiting to be \u201ccaught,\u201d to feel pulled.\u00a0 \u00a0We want to be called, to be singled out, as much if not more than we wanted to be \u201cnot it.\u201d Here, with God, we want to be picked.\u00a0 Instead, I\u2019ve felt caught by my conditions, by my weaknesses, by my faults.<\/p>\n
With my left arm perpetually encased in a compression sleeve, I\u2019ve felt limited in strength, in action, in capacity.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t help that the therapy requires I sit still for an hour with the machine squeezing my left arm.\u00a0 Waking up to see if my arm is lined after I take off the sleeping sleeve isn\u2019t exactly freeing either.\u00a0 In short, I\u2019m three weeks into this lifetime sentence of having my left arm bundled, and I can already tell you, it\u2019s annoying.<\/p>\n
The road of a Catholic life includes lots of time when we\u2019re both convicted that we need to do, and confused because we don\u2019t quite know what it is we\u2019re called to do, only that we\u2019re called.\u00a0 \u00a0So how do we help ourselves find the ways in which the Holy Spirit longs to work with us?<\/p>\n
Begin with an inventory, of your gifts and talents, and of your long hopes.\u00a0 Discernment of one\u2019s call within a call, the ways in which we are to catch others after we are caught, isn\u2019t like getting a \u201ccutie mark.\u201d<\/p>\n
We\u2019re never one and done with our interactions with God, and our free will always plays into the process.\u00a0 So what we long for, what we think we desire, is not irrelevant to God or this process. God made us for joy, and when we do things that make time fall away, or which bring joy to ourselves and others, that a sign that this gift, this act, whatever it is, is part of our vocation.\u00a0 \u00a0However, God always leaves room for us to grow into even more of our vocation, and for our vocation to be bigger than any of our plans. Vocations always are.<\/p>\n
Which brings me back to wondering, why do I have this left arm business and what does God want with me now?\u00a0 How do I get more caught?\u00a0 \u00a0How do I help catch others?\u00a0 \u00a0 By letting myself remember that we are always lost, and always trying to be found.\u00a0 \u00a0I guess God wants me to do this right, with what\u2019s left of me.\u00a0 My brain laughs and thinks, \u201cI am not left handed.\u201d\u00a0 and, \u201cI hope we win.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
