Elizabeth Scalia, a very conservative Catholic writer, tells of finding out from a third party that a male Catholic friend was marrying another man. An anonymous reader implied she would have to shun him to be consistent. Scalia forcefully pares back the layers of confusion inherent in our culture’s sentimentality. The result is a short, beautiful contemplation that unexpectedly showed me a glimpse into the tender heart of the Holy Trinity. Read more

By M. Joshua Cauller The Mindy Project has broken more than a few stereotypes in its single season, but none quite so intriguing as the character introduced in the episode, “My Cool Christian Boyfriend“ (episode 19). Each week in The Moviegoer, Nick Olson examines new and upcoming films. In Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, the name “Superman” is only uttered once or twice, and when he wears the caped suit, it’s a muted–not blinding bright–red and blue. Some viewers will chalk up the details of Snyder’s (and Goyer’s and Nolan’s) reimagination to another instance of “going gritty”–and I suppose there’s something to that, particularly in the film’s controversial, climactic scene–but the mixture of grey to tone down... Read more

Throughout its thirty-seven years of operation, Exodus International has been infamous for championing the Christian “ex-gay” movement. “Ex-gay” organizations advance the belief that, with the help of Christ, anyone within the LGBTQ community can experience a profound reversal in their sexual desires and attractions–even to the point of becoming exclusively heterosexually oriented. Organizations like Exodus have had a tremendous influence on the way that wider Christian culture treats LGBTQ people, and their pie-crust-promise approach of extraordinary, extra-Biblical change has left... Read more

In its continuing efforts to become less dependent on other companies (i.e., movie and television studios) for its content, Netflix is seeking to create more original content. Earlier this year, the company rolled out House of Cards and the revived Arrested Development, and now they’ve struck a deal with DreamWorks Animation. Which gives them new content and, perhaps more importantly, increased name recognition with younger viewers. Read more
