Grace Notes<\/strong>\u00a0is a weekly exploration by Jason Morehead of\u00a0signs of common grace in the music world<\/a>. We hope to alert you to wonderful music, some of which will be spiritual in nature but all of which will be unique and worthy of your attention. Each week we will share brief reviews of albums worthy of your attention and maybe a video or two.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Prayer Chain<\/strong><\/p>\n

It could be argued that during the early 1990s, The Prayer Chain was the<\/strong> Christian alternative band. I know that for me personally, they \u2014 along with Mortal and The Violet Burning \u2014 opened my eyes to the fact that Christians could make music that avoided CCM\u2019s usual clich\u00e9s. But the band\u2019s existence was a turbulent one, and they broke up shortly after their third album, 1995\u2019s Mercury<\/em>. The original version of Mercury<\/em> was rejected by their label, who told them to return to the studio and produce something more sellable. Sixteen years later, the band has posted that original version, now titled Humb<\/a><\/em>, for folks to hear. While listening to Humb<\/em>, three things become clear. First, it\u2019s easy to see why the label rejected the album: it\u2019s dark and turbulent, with cryptic lyrics about sin, bitterness \u2014 and sexual pleasure. Second, parts of it haven\u2019t held up too well over the years (grunge\u2019s\u00a0specter\u00a0looms a bit large at times). And third, and most important, Humb<\/em> contains some brilliant moments that reveal the band to be a juggernaut, particularly when they got all psychedelic a la The Verve on songs like \u201cCreole\u201d and \u201cMercury\u201d. One can\u2019t help but wonder what might\u2019ve been had the band continued down this path, but even so, Humb<\/em> is a fascinating document from Christian alt-rock\u2019s early years.<\/p>\n

Teen Daze<\/strong><\/p>\n

I wrote about Teen Daze\u2019s A Silent Planet<\/em> \u2014 his musical \u201cadaptation\u201d of C.S. Lewis\u2019 Out Of The Silent Planet<\/em> \u2014 back in July<\/a> when the EP\u2019s first single was released. The full EP was released in early September, and can be listened to on Teen Daze\u2019s Bandcamp site<\/a>. If you remember that first single, it was an appropriately spaced out track, full of\u00a0spiraling\u00a0guitars and blissed out vocals. The rest of the EP doesn\u2019t deviate from that too much, and the result is an often lovely and haunting collection of electronic pop that lands somewhere between Washed Out\u2019s evocative \u201cchillwave\u201d, Boards of Canada\u2019s bleary ambience, and M83\u2019s epic shoegazing. My only real complaint is that the vocals are buried so deep in the immense layers of sound and\/or slathered with so many effects as to be well-nigh indecipherable. To be fair, that\u2019s par for the course for this genre, but I\u2019m really curious to see if and how Lewis\u2019 sci-fi prose manifested itself in Teen Daze\u2019s songwriting.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
