Chaplin used her slot to tell the industry, as reasonably as she could, to grow up. See, she covers the business for the mainstream outlets \u2013 she co-write\u00a0Smartbomb<\/em>, the single best book to buy anyone who doesn\u2019t understand your \u201chobby,\u201d and she reports at NPR among other venues. She says this puts her in the role of a \u201ctranslator,\u201d trying to tell the mainstream why gaming even matters. This also means explaining a lot of big-name games that feature zombies, and aliens, and girls in metal bikinis wielding axes. And while she\u2019s heard the excuses \u2013 it\u2019s \u201ca very new medium\u201d \u2013 she\u2019s way past accepting them.<\/p>\nLike Wendy slapping around the lost boys, Chaplin patiently but firmly laid down the line. \u201cIt is you guys as game designers who are mired\u00a0deeply <\/em>in \u2018guy culture,\u2019\u201d Chaplin said. The problem isn\u2019t the medium: \u201cYou <\/em>are a bunch of stunted adolescents.\u201d Games avoid any of the things that separate men from boys: responsibility, introspection, intimacy, and intellectual discovery.
