Top 7 Bible Verses About The Mind May 31, 2015

“A beautiful mind is a terrible thing to waste” is an advertising slogan for the UNCF, and it is so true. God has blessed us with an amazing combination of physical abilities and a brain to help us think, plan, work, and enjoy life. So God wants to bless, strengthen, renew, guard and bless our minds, as we focus our thoughts and actions on him. With that in mind, here are my top 7 Bible verses about the mind.

Luke 10:27 “And he answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.’”

I begin my discussion about the mind with this verse, because as Christians it brings everything into right focus for our entire lives. If we will love the Lord with all of our mind, strength, soul, and heart, our lives will be incredibly blessed and fulfilled. Our purpose here on earth will become clear, and we will experience more joy and wonder-filled lives.

Romans 8:6 “For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.”

Clearly, we have many choices to make as human beings. We can choose to follow Christ, or we can do whatever makes us happy. However, this verse written by the apostle Paul puts it all into perspective. Because the truth is that if we set our minds on our own desires and wants, then we will only find eternal death as our reward. But if we set our mind on God, his Holy Spirit brings us an amazing life now and forever that is full of hope and peace.

Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Becoming a follower of Christ is not restrictive, rather it opens up a whole new world of exciting possibilities and adventures in the Kingdom of God. It does require, though, that we do not embrace or be conformed to the patterns, expectations or desires of the streets. By renewing our minds as Christians, God will give us wisdom and discernment to know and do what is good, acceptable and perfect for our lives.

I Corinthians 2:16 “’For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.”

The Lord knew that we would face many challenges, tests and trials while living on this earth, so he sent his perfect son, Jesus, to be our light, our salvation and our guide. He was God, but he was also human, so we can relate to him fully as one who has experienced the same hardships we face. Thanks to the Holy Spirit, we also have at our reach the ability to have the mind of Christ. And if that is the case, then we can truly do all things through Christ [and his mind] that strengthen us (Philippians 4:13).

Philippians 2:2 “…complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.”

Unity and focus are essential when a sports team is playing a game against their opponents or when a group of people are working on a business proposal or project. Likewise, the Lord wants us to have the same mind and the same love for one another as Christians. It brings joy to God’s heart when his people are united in love and purpose—encouraging and loving each other in their daily lives.

Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Worry, grief, anxiety, and fear are all attacks on our spirit and our mind. So the Lord wants to bestow on us, his children, his peace that passes all understanding, in every circumstance. Even when all seems lost or hopeless, he grants us his peace, if we will just focus our thoughts on him. In other words, when we place our trust on our Creator God, he pours out his peace on us that will actually guard our hearts and minds. Wow, that is awesome, in my opinion.

Hebrews 8:10 “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

Amazingly, our Lord and Savior, wants to have a relationship with us, and he is calling us into a covenant union with him. As we put our hope and faith in him, he rewards us by placing his laws into our minds. He will also write them on our hearts, so that he can be our God, and we can be his people. As our minds are filled by his word, our lives are enriched and blessed beyond measure with God almighty being everything in our very lives.

CONCLUSION

As human beings we are blessed to have great minds and bodies given to us by God. And he wants to bless us and enable us to use them for our greatest potential. This can be achieved as we keep our focus on him. As it says in Proverbs 19:21, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” So as we align our hearts and minds with the Lord, then our purpose on earth will not only be clear but successful.

God has been good to me over the years, and I have much for which to be grateful to Him. First of all, I feel blessed to be the pastor’s wife of a thriving church in northern Michigan and the mother of four amazing grown children. It is also very rewarding to be a Christian author, editor and translator for the Kingdom of God. Some of my favorite pastimes include supporting my children’s contemporary Christian band ONLY9AM, singing on the worship team at church, traveling, and connecting with family and friends via social media. When I am not working, I love spending time with my family and especially with my precious three-year-old grandson.
