{"id":2172,"date":"2014-12-06T19:47:42","date_gmt":"2014-12-07T01:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/christiancrier\/?p=2172"},"modified":"2014-12-06T19:47:42","modified_gmt":"2014-12-07T01:47:42","slug":"who-were-the-amalekites-in-the-bible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/christiancrier\/2014\/12\/06\/who-were-the-amalekites-in-the-bible\/","title":{"rendered":"Who Were The Amalekites In The Bible?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Who were the Amalekites mentioned in the Bible?\u00a0 Why is it important that we should know about them?<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Origins of the Amalekites<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Amalekites are descendants of Amalek who was the grandson of Esau.\u00a0 Genesis 36:15-16 states <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cThese are the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau: the chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, Korah, Gatam, and Amalek; these are the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Adah.\u201d\u00a0<\/span> The Amalekites, like the Edomite\u2019s, were a continual source of strife for Israel as they occupied land that was rightfully assigned to Israel and later Judah.\u00a0 This includes the Trans Jordanian states.\u00a0 When Israel was in the wilderness from their exile from Egypt, the Amalekites attacked them as we read in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+17%3A8-16\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Exodus 17:8<\/a> \u201c<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim\u201d<\/span> which was completely unprovoked.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Arch Enemies of Israel<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the period of the Judges, <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cthe Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them (Israel). \u00a0They would encamp against them and devour the produce of the land, as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel and no sheep or ox or donkey\u201d<\/span> (Judges 6:3-4).\u00a0 The Amalekites were historically invasive and consistent raiders throughout Judea.\u00a0 In the reign of King David, he once<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> \u201crecovered all that the Amalekites had taken\u201d (1 Sam 30:18)<\/span>. Frequently, the Amalekites would join together with other nations in an attempt to destroy Israel as we read in 1 Samuel <span data-term=\"goog_1917906756\">6:33<\/span> which say that <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cthe Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East came together, and they crossed the Jordan and encamped in the Valley of Jezreel.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> The odds were stacked against Israel as <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cthe Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number, as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance\u201d (Judges <span data-term=\"goog_1917906757\">7:12<\/span>)<\/span> but with Gideon\u2019s small army of 300 plus the Mighty God fighting for them <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cthe Lord set every man\u2019s sword against his comrade and against all the army. And the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath\u201d (Judges <span data-term=\"goog_1917906758\">7:22<\/span>).\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>The very last thing we ever hear about the Amalekites is that Israel <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cdefeated the remnant of the Amalekites who had escaped, and they have lived there to this day\u201d (1 Chron <span data-term=\"goog_1917906759\">4:43<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Amalekites and the Edomite\u2019s<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Amalekites and the Edomite\u2019s were both of the stock or family lineage of Edom so the Amalekites were actually considered to be part of the Edomite\u2019s in a sense much like the Australian\u2019s are considered to be descendants of the British. \u00a0Some biblical scholars believe that they are not actually Arabs but a separate people, being descendants of Esau\u2019s first-born son Eliphaz. \u00a0\u00a0That is, Amalek, the father of the Amalekites was the first-born son of Esau\u2019s first-born son Eliphaz.\u00a0 The Amalekites were sometimes referred to as the <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cfirst of the nations<\/span>\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/numbers\/24-20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Numb 24:20<\/a>) and were the first nation outside of Egypt to have a conflict with Israel (Ex 17:8). \u00a0Like the Edomite\u2019s the Amalekites were typical of the enemies that Israel would face throughout their history as a nation.\u00a0\u00a0 As Amalek is a descendent of Esau, his descendants, the Amalekites, inherited Esau\u2019s hostility toward Jacob (or Israel which his name was later changed to).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is hard to find any remnants of the Amalekites today but we do know that those who have never repented of their sins and put their trust in Jesus Christ are, at this moment, still enemies of God. \u00a0For those who have been born again, we were once God\u2019s enemies because<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> \u201cwhile we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life\u201d<\/span> (Rom <span data-term=\"goog_1917906760\">5:10<\/span>).\u00a0 This is how <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cGod shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us\u201d<\/span> (Rom 5:8) and we now <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201chave peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ\u201d<\/span> (Rom 5:1).\u00a0 Here is the choice that you have before you today: \u201cWhoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him\u201d (John <span data-term=\"goog_1917906761\">3:36<\/span>).<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Who were the Amalekites mentioned in the Bible?\u00a0 Why is it important that we should know about them?
