It looks lovely. \u00a0So, lovely, you almost forgive the fact that this is a one note tragedy about a lovely, and intelligent young woman who is crushed under the injustice and occasional brutality of unbridled patriarchy. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the costumes are grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat! \u00a0And if it doesn\u2019t win best costume than whomever spent two years designing and sewing the hundreds of gorgeous dresses and hats on display here will probably jump off the top of the Paramount arches.<\/div>\n

It wasn\u2019t a mess. \u00a0It just didn\u2019t go very many places. \u00a0It wasn\u2019t a story so much as like watching a long drawn out train wreck screeching along the track until you hit the climactic screaming marital rape scene that finally succeeds in breaking the heroine\u2019s will to virtue.<\/div>\n

The movie seemed to me to be a thinly veiled look at the Princess Di story. \u00a0As such, it felt creepily voyeuristic to me. \u00a0Ralph Fiennes seemed to have spent hours mastering Prince Charles\u2019 strained awkwardness as he selfishly insists that he needs his mistress to live under the same roof as his wife and children. \u00a0You could hear Di\u2019s soft voice echoing off the theater walls: \u00a0\u201cFrom the beginning there were three of us in this marriage.\u201d \u00a0There was another line in which a character proclaimed, \u201cEveryone in the world loves the Duchess, except the Duke.\u201d<\/div>\n

Keira Knightly does well as a manikin for the gorgeous costumes. \u00a0Not so well as an actor. \u00a0I was never sure what her character was really making of her predicament. \u00a0I wasn\u2019t sure if she was shrewd or clueless, heroically resolute or coweringly impotent.<\/div>\n

In the end, I stood in the parking lot of the Director\u2019s Guild and asked my friend, \u201cSo, do we recommend this movie?\u201d \u00a0She shrugged at me and said, \u201cWell, I wouldn\u2019t sit through it again.\u201d \u00a0I had to agree. \u00a0So, it isn\u2019t a pass, but it isn\u2019t a recommend either. \u00a0It\u2019s just kind of there.<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
