Here\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> an article about a recent talk I gave at Notre Dame. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s always funny to read articles and see what people heard, as opposed to what I actually said. For example, I\u2019m certain I didn\u2019t say that thing about \u201csorrow\u201d in the beautiful giving the receiver a sense of it\u2019s (the sorrow\u2019s) hugeness. I said that beauty gives us an experience of happy-sadness, and that the beautiful itself communicates a sense of majesty and hugeness that is humbling for us.<\/p>\n

While I did recommend Curious George<\/em> for little kids, I don\u2019t think I said it was an example of \u201cunusual depth\u201d! I\u2019m pretty sure I said it had some cool moments that were surprising in a kids\u2019 movie.<\/p>\n

But the article does get the basic point I was making about what beauty in movies willlook like. Here\u2019s a snip\u2026<\/p>\n

Beauty in the film industry is \u201cnot cute or easy or nice,\u201d she said. It is complex. In addition to having good characters, conflict and visuals, a beautiful film will give viewers the sense that it is complete and that they have learned something.<\/em><\/p>\n

A beautiful film \u201cgives you something that becomes part of your framework, and you carry it away with you,\u201d she said. It is \u201cdark, hard and wonderful\u201d at the same time.<\/p>\n
