The word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stranger<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Arabic, <\/span><b>ibn al-sabeel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, literally means \u201cthe son of the road\u201d\u2014someone displaced, vulnerable, traveling without support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our tradition, welcoming the stranger is not optional. It\u2019s sacred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, today\u2019s headlines tell a harsher story: <\/span><b>mass deportations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continue, such as the March 2025 removal of over 130 Venezuelans to El Salvador\u2014many held indefinitely without due process\u2014under an invoked wartime law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even U.S. citizens aren\u2019t exempt: ICE has wrongfully detained <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/G-xlZd00pJU?si=a2v6RFAIg5v6Roo7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">American-born children<\/a>, veterans, and others in sweeping raids.<br>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">U.S.-Born Children Deported<\/span><\/h3>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G-xlZd00pJU?si=eF48_1OxaAOzWQyI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The political rhetoric has escalated, too. In July 2025, President Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7299415\/zohran-mamdani-trump-arrest-threat\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threatened<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>arrest and deport naturalized U.S. citizen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/politics\/zohran-mamdani-primary-votes-record-union\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Zohran Mamdani<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a prominent Muslim politician, after Mamdani vowed to block ICE raids in New York.\u00a0 Mamdani also happens to be the Democratic mayoral candidate who received the highest number of votes in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/08\/us-news\/zohran-mamdani-won-most-votes-of-a-candidate-nyc-primary-history\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">New York City primary election\u00a0history<\/a>. A GOP congressman even called for his citizenship to be revoked and deported. These threats aren\u2019t abstract\u2014they\u2019re chilling examples of how immigration policy and political intimidation are converging in real time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When immigrants and refugees make headlines, the media rarely highlight the churches, mosques, synagogues\u2014and interfaith coalitions\u2014working tirelessly in neighborhoods across the country: offering legal clinics, shelter, and solidarity. Coverage all too often flattens faith voices into two camps: those who demonize the outsider and those absent entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This must change. The moral labor of faith communities on the frontlines of migration isn\u2019t charity\u2014it\u2019s covenant. We\u2019re not spectators in the immigration debate\u2014we are <\/span><b>stakeholders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, guided by conscience and commandment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Economic Justice: Where Are the Prophets of the Present?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a merchant\u2014and he preached fair trade, honest weights, and the importance of paying workers on time.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He condemned the hoarding of wealth, and uplifted those who gave freely in secret.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, economic inequality is among the most pressing issues facing our society. Yet when the media covers inflation, debt, and poverty, where are the voices speaking from faith traditions that demand economic dignity?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t hear the mosque collecting zakat (obligatory charity) for the local housing crisis.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t hear the rabbi reminding her congregation that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ctzedakah\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t just generosity\u2014it\u2019s justice.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t hear the pastor advocating for living wages in the tradition of the Gospel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faith communities are not passive observers of the economy. We are running community pantries. We are organizing co-ops. We are resisting exploitation.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we deserve to be seen not as relics of the past\u2014but as radical voices for equity in the present.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Gun Violence: Mourning Isn\u2019t Our Only Role<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every time gun violence takes another life, faith communities are called upon to comfort the broken-hearted. And we do. We show up with prayer, presence, and peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2242\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2242\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/coalitionforfaithandmedia\/2025\/05\/islamic-ethics-call-leaders-to-serve-not-rule\/chatgpt-image-may-15-2025-08_03_59-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2242\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2242\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/2338\/2025\/05\/ChatGPT-Image-May-15-2025-08_03_59-AM-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"A muslim volunteer poll worker helps a citizen vote in an election.\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2242\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteering, voting, organizing, protesting, and even running for office can all be acts of sacred duty when done with integrity and purpose.<br>| Image Created in Dalle for Patheos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But let\u2019s be clear: we do more than mourn.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We advocate.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We march.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We meet with lawmakers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We bury children\u2014and then we organize to ensure others don\u2019t have to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet the media often reduces us to passive grievers, instead of prophetic voices demanding change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at the reality: in 2023, the U.S. saw <\/span><b>over 46,700 gun-related <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/03\/05\/what-the-data-says-about-gun-deaths-in-the-us\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><b>deaths<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014more than half of them by suicide, and nearly 18,000 by homicide. In 2024, non-suicide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrace.org\/2024\/12\/data-gun-violence-shooting-stats-america\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> deaths dropped to <\/span><b>16,576<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while over <\/span><b>31,000 people were injured <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.jhu.edu\/center-for-gun-violence-solutions\/research-reports\/gun-violence-in-the-united-states\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">firearms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Alarmingly, <\/span><b>over 5,000 children and teens were shot<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>1,400 of them died<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There were <\/span><b>499 mass shootings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2024 alone\u2014averaging more than one per day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though the numbers slightly declined, the scale of suffering is still staggering. And so is the silence when it comes to how these numbers are covered. The media focuses on events\u2014but not on the moral weight behind them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our faith teaches that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preserving life is sacred<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the Qur\u2019an, it is written: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf anyone saves a life, it is as if they saved all of humanity\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Qur\u2019an 5:32). So when imams, pastors, rabbis, and spiritual leaders call for gun reform, it is not a political position\u2014it is a spiritual obligation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are not just spiritual janitors cleaning up after a broken society. We are builders of a better one. And we will continue to lead with faith, facts, and fierce love for our communities\u2014whether or not the cameras are rolling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Climate Crisis: Beyond Partisan Talking Points<\/b><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2402\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2402\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/2338\/2025\/07\/AdobeStock_863695751.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2402\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/2338\/2025\/07\/AdobeStock_863695751-1024x574.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"437\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A muslim asian young woman employee joins a corporate team for an eco-friendly park forest cleanup. | Image courtesy of Adobe Stock.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most overlooked aspects of climate coverage is the <\/span><b>moral and spiritual leadership<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coming from faith communities. In the Qur\u2019an, it is written: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCorruption has appeared on land and sea because of what people\u2019s hands have done\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (30:41). This isn\u2019t just a warning\u2014it\u2019s a call to responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the country, faith leaders are taking that responsibility seriously. From churches installing solar panels, to Jewish communities organizing tree-planting drives, to Indigenous activists defending sacred land\u2014<\/span><b>faith-based climate action is thriving<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And at the forefront of this interfaith movement is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/greenfaith.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><b>GreenFaith<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a global organization that mobilizes people of all religions to fight for environmental justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GreenFaith\u2019s U.S. campaigns bring together clergy and lay people across traditions\u2014Protestants, Catholics, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Sikhs, and more. Their \u201cFaiths for Climate Justice\u201d rallies, divestment campaigns, and civil disobedience actions have united thousands in calling for policies that reflect both science and spiritual values.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among their key leaders is <\/span><b>Nana Firman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an American Muslim environmentalist and former Muslim outreach director at GreenFaith. She\u2019s helped champion \u201cGreen Ramadan\u201d initiatives that encourage sustainability practices during the holy month and has spoken globally about the moral imperative for climate action rooted in Islamic values of balance (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mizan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and stewardship (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">khalifah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But too often, the media reduces environmental activism to a partisan cause, missing the broader truth: <\/span><b>for many people, protecting the Earth is not political\u2014it\u2019s sacred<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faith communities aren\u2019t just reacting to climate change. We are <\/span><b>proactively shaping how society should respond<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014with compassion, intergenerational responsibility, and courage. It\u2019s time media outlets spotlight this faith-rooted leadership\u2014not just as a feel-good aside, but as a vital force for justice and change.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Reproductive Rights: Nuance, Not Noise<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps no issue is more misrepresented than the intersection of faith and reproductive rights. Media coverage often reduces religious voices to predictable polarities\u2014pro-life vs. pro-choice\u2014ignoring the nuanced conversations happening within communities of faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, many Muslim Americans are actively engaging with reproductive justice in thoughtful, compassionate ways. As reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/articles\/muslim-advocates-ramp-up-the-fight-for-reproductive-justice\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truthout<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, groups like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hearttogrow.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><b>HEART<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Health, Empowerment, Advocacy, Rights &amp; Targets) and <\/span><b>Muslim Advocates <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are leading this important work\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HEART<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a grassroots network, offers reproductive health education tailored for Muslim communities, grounding their outreach in Islamic ethics of care, bodily autonomy, and well-being. They especially focus on equitable access to sexual and reproductive health information\u2014breaking taboos and empowering women, without contradicting faith values\u202f.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/muslimadvocates.org\/2022\/06\/supreme-courts-radical-abortion-decision-threatens-muslims-civil-rights\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><b>Muslim Advocates<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a well-established legal and policy organization, has launched a reproductive justice initiative to address misinformation, advocate for accessible care, and uplift the voices of Muslim women. They challenge the simplistic media narrative that Muslim communities are uniformly opposed to reproductive rights\u202f.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What emerges from their work is profound nuance:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faith-informed compassion doesn\u2019t end life prematurely, nor does it demand silence on bodily autonomy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethical reflection and community care can\u2014and must\u2014coexist with religious conviction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faith communities are not limited to reactionary stances; they can lead with pastoral intentionality on complex issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Islamic jurisprudence supports this nuance. Scholars note that abortion is permissible under various conditions\u2014ranging from protecting the mother\u2019s health to addressing severe fetal abnormalities\u2014particularly before ensoulment (often understood to be around 120 days)\u202f. That deep ethical discussion is often absent from mainstream media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when women of faith\u2014especially Muslim women\u2014step forward to share their stories and wisdom, they\u2019re not outliers. They\u2019re prophets of compassion, illuminating a richer moral landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s time for the media to move beyond the binary. Faith isn\u2019t always a barrier to reproductive justice\u2014it can be its foundation. By highlighting organizations like HEART and Muslim Advocates\u2014and the women leading them\u2014the narrative becomes honest, inclusive, and rooted in lived reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Real Work: Beyond Headlines and Hashtags<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is, faith communities are doing the hard work of democracy every single day.
