but in the Greek of Socrates and Plato, or at any rate in a reasonably accurate facsimile thereof, disguised and even disfigured though this was in the Koine by the intervening centuries of Hellenistic usage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continues in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0300062559\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0300062559&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=cothinlo-20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Christianity and Classical Culture<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result of this convergence, every attempt to translate the New Testament into andy of almost two thousand languages\u2013including a Semitic language such as Syriac, despite all its affinities with Hebrew and Aramaic\u2013has, on encountering any term, been obliged to consider above all its previous career in the history of the Greek language; and that was a problem of natural theology [metaphysics] no less than a problem of philology.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_568\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-568\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/455\/2013\/06\/god-greek.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-568\" alt=\"god greek\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/455\/2013\/06\/god-greek.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"402\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0800624491\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0800624491&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=cothinlo-20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Good guestion<\/a>. . . according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0300062559\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0300062559&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=cothinlo-20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pelikan<\/a>:\u00a0Yes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There\u2019s been quite a lot of talk about divorcing God from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0800624491\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0800624491&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=cothinlo-20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Greek heritage<\/a> at the very least ever since Harnack. While trying to argue away the Greek \u201caccretions\u201d to some vaguely \u201cpure\u201d Gospel <a title=\"In this suspect book.\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=3qJFc-tbPgoC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">he said<\/a>, \u201c. . . Roman Catholicism has nothing to do with the Gospel, nay, is in fundamental contradiction with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll see about that as tomorrow we turn to the article<a title=\"Buh-bye?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearreligion.org\/articles\/2013\/06\/08\/farewell_old_pagan_world.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"> \u201cFarewell, Old Pagan World\u201d<\/a> by Philip Jenkins, one of our leading public commentators on religion. We will modify modify his claims, to the advantage of impurity, with the help of <a title=\"She sometimes writes with blinding clarity.  \" href=\"http:\/\/journal.telospress.com\/content\/1998\/113\/19.abstract\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Catherine Pickstock<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While we\u2019re at it, let\u2019s not forget the influence of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0943575931\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0943575931&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=cothinlo-20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Philo of Alexandria<\/a> and the translators of the Hebrew Bible into Greek, what became known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Septuagint\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Septuagint<\/a>. The connections between Greek and biblical thinking go deep.
