Traditionally, this has been translated, \u201cwork out your own salvation.\u201d But I went in a different direction, because (1) Paul is not talking about earning salvation by human works (obviously) and (2) Paul is not necessarily talking about future (i.e., afterlife) salvation. Phil 2:12 echoes what he already said about his\u00a0own<\/em> divine deliverance in 1:19. It is not that they need to be working or doing good works, but rather it is about being active in following God\u2019s lead in how he is guiding them through their difficulties. I found that \u201clive out\u201d captures the meaning of\u00a0\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b3\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5 better than \u201cwork out\u201d because just the language of \u201cwork(s)\u201d gets people worked up and confused.<\/p>\n \u03c7\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03c9 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03c7\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03c9 \u03c0\u1fb6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd \u1f51\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd\u00a0\u03c4\u1f78 \u03b4\u1f72 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1f78 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u1f51\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c2 \u03c7\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03b5\u03c4\u03b5 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c3\u03c5\u03b3\u03c7\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03b5\u03c4\u1f73 \u03bc\u03bf\u03b9.<\/p>\n Whenever I can, I try to avoid \u201cChristian-ese\u201d language in translation (\u201crejoice\u201d!) because we overuse it and it loses its meaning. Here, I didn\u2019t want to use \u201crejoice.\u201d We just don\u2019t use this word in everyday speech the way Paul and others in his time used \u03c7\u03b1\u1f77\u03c1\u03c9. I wanted to find the most natural way today to express what he was expressing; so I went for \u201ccelebrate\/celebration\u201d and \u201ctoasting.\u201d<\/p>\n This is a remarkable set of verses. Paul is facing death, and perhaps the Philippians too. And rather than cool down their concerns, he confronts this prospect head-on.\u00a0I might die? OK, let\u2019s go out with style! Cheers to you, it will be the most glorious death ever!<\/em> Phil 2:17-18 is kind of morbid in that way, but Paul is instilling in the Philippians a whole new way to look at their life\u2014and their death\u2014as being to the glory of God alone.
