In my book\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3eX1C9F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Reading Philippians<\/a>, I offer my own fresh translation of this letter. I tried to provide a readable, modern English translation, which means I made some untraditional choices. Follow along as I talk through some of these decisions. (4:8)<\/h2>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 27\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u1f45\u03c3\u03b1 \u1f10\u03c3\u03c4\u1f76\u03bd \u1f00\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u1fc6,\u00a0<\/span>\u1f45\u03c3\u03b1 \u03c3\u03b5\u03bc\u03bd\u1f71, \u1f45\u03c3\u03b1 \u03b4\u1f77\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03b1, \u1f45\u03c3\u03b1 \u1f01\u03b3\u03bd\u1f71, \u1f45\u03c3\u03b1 \u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03c6\u03b9\u03bb\u1fc6, \u1f45\u03c3\u03b1 \u03b5\u1f54\u03c6\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1, \u03b5\u1f34 \u03c4\u03b9\u03c2 \u1f00\u03c1\u03b5\u03c4\u1f74 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03b5\u1f34 \u03c4\u03b9\u03c2 \u1f14\u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2, \u03c4\u03b1\u1fe6\u03c4\u03b1 \u03bb\u03bf\u03b3\u1f77\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b5\u00b7<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>OK, I took some artistic liberties here. Paul was using poetical style here (e.g., with the repeated\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">\u1f45\u03c3\u03b1), so I wanted to capture that. I did it in visual form (with the cascading text). Probably the hardest word for me to translate here was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u03b5\u1f54\u03c6\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1, which commonly is translated \u201cpraiseworthy.\u201d I found that \u201cthe spectacular\u201d conveys that sense best in modern English. Think about this: if you saw someone compete in a gymnastics competition and they did great, you wouldn\u2019t say to them afterwards, \u201cThat was praiseworthy!\u201d You might say, \u201cThat was spectacular!\u201d So, that is what I went for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>I have experienced the lowest lows, and I have experienced the highest highs. In every situation and in all of life, God has taught me a secret\u201413 I always have everything I need from the All-Powerful God, and this truth doesn\u2019t change whether I am full or hungry, rich or poor. (4:12-13)<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> <sup>12 <\/sup><\/span> \u03bf\u1f36\u03b4\u03b1 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c4\u03b1\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9, \u03bf\u1f36\u03b4\u03b1 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u00b7 \u1f10\u03bd \u03c0\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u1f76 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u1f10\u03bd \u03c0\u1fb6\u03c3\u03b9\u03bd \u03bc\u03b5\u03bc\u1f7b\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9, \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c7\u03bf\u03c1\u03c4\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u1fb6\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u1f51\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9\u00b7<span class=\"s1\"><sup>13 <\/sup><\/span> \u03c0\u1f71\u03bd\u03c4\u03b1 \u1f30\u03c3\u03c7\u1f7b\u03c9 \u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1ff7 \u1f10\u03bd\u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u1f77 \u03bc\u03b5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Here I had to intermix vv. 12-13, since they together convey one idea. I liked the idea of rendering\u00a0\u03c4\u1ff7 \u1f10\u03bd\u03b4\u03c5\u03bd\u03b1\u03bc\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u1f77 \u03bc\u03b5 as \u201cthe All-Powerful God\u201d even though it is talking about empowering Paul (rather than just\u00a0 generic title for God). I think the implication of that is noticeable. I also wanted to make it clear Paul was\u00a0<em>not<\/em> talking about getting whatever he wants from God. So I had to fill in some of his unspoken words, which are still identifiable from the context. Hence, \u201cthis truth doesn\u2019t change whether I am full or hungry, rich or poor.\u201d Of course, he does talk about being full\/hungry and rich\/poor explicitly (\u03c7\u03bf\u03c1\u03c4\u1f71\u03b6\u03b5\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c0\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd\u1fb6\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03c0\u03b5\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c3\u03b5\u1f7b\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u1f51\u03c3\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03b5\u1fd6\u03c3\u03b8\u03b1\u03b9), but you have to make the connection from 4:12 to 4:13 to understand fully his meaning.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wipfandstock.com\/reading-philippians.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13976\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/1287\/2020\/04\/RP-BookAD.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Translating Philippians This is a blog series reflecting on Bible translation by looking at the Greek text of Philippians.
