The Coen brothers attracted some remarkable talent for the soundtrack for their movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?<\/i>; and one of my favorite tracks is this one, performed by Alison Krauss & Gillian Welch. Typically for bluegrass, it\u2019s about going to heaven.<\/p>\n<\/iframe>\nThe song has been recorded by virtually everyone; I first encountered it in bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley\u2019s version:<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bn-1p3MU39k\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bn-1p3MU39k<\/a>\nOne verse contains this lyric,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\nJust a few more weary days and then \nI\u2019ll fly away \nTo a land where joys will never end \nI\u2019ll fly away\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\nIt doesn\u2019t matter who sings it, my ear persists that penultimate line as \u201cto a land where George will never end.\u201d Now, Ralph Stanley is half of the Stanley Brothers; but his brother died in 1966 and Ralph went on without him. And on the basis of my mishearing, I\u2019d persuaded myself that Ralph had written the song as a tribute to his brother George.<\/p>\nTurns out that that Ralph\u2019s brother was named Carter Stanley, and the song was written in 1929 by Albert Brumley.
