One post on the paintings of Paul C\u00e9zanne\u2019s is not enough and so I explored his relentless engagement with nature in\u00a0\u201cThe Creaturely Work of Paul C\u00e9zanne\u201d<\/a>\u00a0over at ThinkChristian<\/a>, where I blog from time to time. \u00a0C\u00e9zanne was relentless in his desire to do one thing: paint nature. Yet it was by returning the artist and the viewer to the world, to look at it closely and to feel it intensely, that opened the path toward abstraction\u2014an approach to painting that theological reflection, in its haste, has too often misinterpreted.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In addition to looking at C\u00e9zanne\u2019s work at the Museum of Modern Art, I also spent considerable time with \u201cInventing Abstraction: 1910-1925: How a Radical idea Changed Modern Art.\u201d An ambitious exhibition that brought together the most important works of this period, \u201cInventing Abstraction\u201d explored the origins of \u201cnon-objective\u201d abstraction, that is, abstraction that makes no observable<\/em> connection to the visible world. My review of this exhibition and its implications for theological reflection on painting and modern art will next week over at Good Letters<\/a>, the daily blog of IMAGE Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n
