And its gushing celebration<\/a> of Pope Francis\u2019s war on\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Fundamentalism. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I find the sudden thrashing and trashing of fundamentalism not unlike the trashing and thrashing of communism and socialism back in the day. \u00a0After all, when we say \u2018fundamentalists\u2019, we usually mean some group of people holding fast to ideas or beliefs we disagree with. \u00a0What is a fundamentalist? \u00a0<\/span><\/span>Someone who flies jets into skyscrapers?\u00a0<\/span>
Someone who thinks they are right and everyone who disagrees is wrong? \u00a0If that is the case, who isn\u2019t a fundamentalist\/ <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It was as recent as the West Wing where, liberal though that show was, it went out of its way to point out that fundamentalism is not terrorism. \u00a0Something we seem to have forgotten. \u00a0Perhaps it\u2019s just that we need someone to point our fingers at. \u00a0Someone other than us. Sure, there is such a thing as fundamentalism. \u00a0And usually, it\u2019s us. \u00a0Holding to fundamentals we will not budge on. \u00a0After all, does Pope Francis think he might be wrong about some of the things he says? \u00a0Some of the things he condemns? \u00a0Probably no more than a KJV fundamentalist holds to his particular view of Bible translations. \u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

At the end of the day, we\u2019re all fundamentalists about the things we cherish, and usually pretty tolerant and open, dare I say liberal, about the things we don\u2019t. \u00a0Just what those things are might be different, but we\u2019re all the same in that way. \u00a0So the growing idea that fundamentalism and fundamentalists should all be lumped in with the world\u2019s worst and condemned outright suggests we\u2019re seeing just one more generation looking for the \u2018them\u2019 who we can blame for everything. \u00a0And for a Pope who famously asked who is he to judge, I think he\u2019s shown us exactly who he is to judge, and judge brutally and with a zeal that would shame many a fundamentalist pastor on sawdust floors in a South Alabama tent revival. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
