Not because the fireworks themselves weren\u2019t good. \u00a0And they weren\u2019t. \u00a0Perhaps it was the weather, the lack of wind, the moisture, but most of the display was a giant multi-colored cloud of smoke for most of the night. \u00a0Still, I don\u2019t fault the fireworks for that, because they are now digital and don\u2019t adjust well to sudden changes in conditions.\u00a0<\/div>\n
What I fault it for was the deplorable music. \u00a0If you like rap and hip-hop, then it was just right for you. \u00a0But if you expect things like patriotic music or themes, then a massive disappointment. \u00a0With the exception of a couple songs associated with The Ohio State University, Proud to be an American<\/i>, Neil Diamond\u2019s America<\/i>, and the annual military music medley, there was nothing. \u00a0Nothing. \u00a0No God Bless America<\/i>. \u00a0No This is My Country<\/i>. \u00a0No Stars and Stripes Forever.<\/i> \u00a0They didn\u2019t even have the 1812 Overture<\/i> which, admittedly, has little to do with our independence but has become a staple on 4th of July over the years. \u00a0Nothing.\u00a0<\/div>\n

It was hip-hop. \u00a0It was rap. \u00a0More hip-hop. \u00a0Some sexually charged themes. A few allusions to drugs. More sex. \u00a0Hip-hop. \u00a0Rap. \u00a0A momentary nod to the Scorpions\u2019 Rock You Like a Hurricane<\/i>. \u00a0One or two songs from the 60s and 70s. \u00a0Back to the rap. \u00a0Hip-hop. \u00a0Then two movie themes I didn\u2019t recognize to round up the show. \u00a0<\/div>\n

In some country that had little to do with independence, freedom, or God, it was good enough. \u00a0Perhaps a country that cared for nothing other than hedonism, narcissism, sex, drugs and more sex, it was just the right mixture of keen and inspiring music and show tunes. \u00a0But for those silly folks who think America is something more, you couldn\u2019t help but be disappointed. \u00a0<\/div>\n

The good news is that PBS was showing an older concert and fireworks display in Baltimore hosted by the always wonderful John Lithgow. \u00a0We saw the last five songs, and not a non-patriotic song among them. \u00a0Well done Baltimore. \u00a0<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
