Now Easter is not like Halloween or Christmas. \u00a0It\u2019s a little better than Thanksgiving in terms of specials. \u00a0Thanksgiving is a barren wasteland, unless you\u2019re into modern takes in which sadistic genocidal barbarians sweep into a veritable paradise peopled by godlike beings, any one of which could easily die for the sins of humanity. \u00a0If that\u2019s not your cup of tea, you have to go back and dig, or settle for football.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">But Easter, while not as filled with options as the first two mentioned, still holds its own. \u00a0The 1950s were especially plentiful for Hollywood spectacles trying to unpack biblical themes. \u00a0Some were hits, others misses. \u00a0All were designed to sway people away from that new invention that was luring them into their living rooms and away from the movie theaters.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">Other specials have come and gone. \u00a0And you always get the media\u2019s yearly nod to heresy as a gift to the Christian faith that the media despises. \u00a0But these five are the ones we try, if possible, to see every year. \u00a0No matter what, we watch <i>The Ten Commandments<\/i>. \u00a0And my love for that movie has been documented elsewhere. \u00a0<i>Jesus of Nazareth<\/i>, a mini-series from the dawn of mini-series mania, is too long to watch in one setting. \u00a0But we try to see the last parts of it dealing with the Passion Week. There are others I could have listed, but these five we will see at least every couple years, if not every year.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><b><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">The Ten Commandments (1956)<\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\">\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a width=\"400\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">Well done ABC for continuing the tradition of showing this magnificent extravaganza, just like it did when I was growing up. \u00a0As a kid, I didn\u2019t pay attention to most of the build up. \u00a0But once the plagues begin, I was glued to the set. \u00a0Of course there have always been detractors, but as I take account of just who those detractors are, I come to love and admire the film all the more. \u00a0It\u2019s entirely kid safe. \u00a0And for my money, a film that bludgeons me with the message \u2018human slavery is bad\u2019 is a damn sight better than one that joins the modern bedrock of future genocides with the message \u2018we need to eliminate the\u00a0<\/span>surplus<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0population to save the planet!\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/daffeythoughts\/2013\/04\/i-love-ten-commandments.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" width=\"400\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">Released the same\u00a0<\/span>year as<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0the groundbreaking series <i>Roots<\/i>, J<i>esus of Nazareth<\/i> has weathered the time a little\u00a0better. \u00a0Roots was heavy handed, and the preachiness was at times a little over the top, even if the evils of slavery needed to be shown. \u00a0Still, it was in the early days, meaning that Hollywood was still finding its way with this new form of production. \u00a0But despite the earliness of the series, <i>Jesus of Nazareth<\/i> still looks fresh more often than not.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">Probably no other series has the proportional\u00a0<\/span>star power<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">. \u00a0Just about ever person is an A-list character actor or\u00a0even A-list actor, period. \u00a0James Earl Jones, Micheal York, Peter Ustinov, James Mason, Lawrence Olivier, why the list is endless. \u00a0Zeffirelli\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>cinematography<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0is breathtaking, the music stirring, and the\u00a0series takes pains to make sure that some classical\u00a0<\/span>paintings<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>artwork<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0that Christians\u00a0would\u00a0have known make their way into the composition of various scenes. \u00a0You can almost hear Pilate say, \u201cEcce homo!\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">Yes, it is a \u2018low fantasy\u2019 version of the Gospels. \u00a0Most miracles are downplayed, and many of the overt\u00a0<\/span>supernatural<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0stories are eliminated altogether. \u00a0Robert Powell\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>portrayal<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0is of a small, mystical savior,\u00a0very human, and very frail physically, though in control spiritually. \u00a0It also gives Judas an out as the well meaning but ultimately exploited victim of the resident bad guy (played by the always solid and reliable Ian Holm). \u00a0Nonetheless, compared to the media\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>installments<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0nowadays, this is closer to\u00a0Sunday School than you can imagine. \u00a0<\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">And some of the all star cast \u2013 again\u00a0<\/span>probably<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0the most star laden of any series ever \u2013 shine in\u00a0their\u00a0<\/span>respective<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0rolls. A\u00a0few seem miscast it is true. \u00a0But Michael York as the Baptist, James Farentino as the stumbling bumbling soon to be leader of the new church, and Rod Steiger\u2019s unmatched\u00a0<\/span>portrayal<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0of Pilate are\u00a0the high points of a series just filled with high po<br>\nints.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><b><span style=\"font-size: large\">Ben Hur<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\">\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/715\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-OBOBIU_uVgk\/VSlKpsKHC4I\/AAAAAAAAGNI\/opoTFoyO020\/s1600\/Ben%20Hur.jpg\" style=\"clear: left;float: left;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-right: 1em\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/715\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-OBOBIU_uVgk\/VSlKpsKHC4I\/AAAAAAAAGNI\/opoTFoyO020\/s1600\/Ben%20Hur.jpg\" height=\"215\" width=\"400\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">Equaled only by <\/span><i style=\"font-family: inherit\">Titanic<\/i><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"> for the number of Oscars won, Ben Hur is all that the <\/span><i style=\"font-family: inherit\">Ten Commandments<\/i><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"> are, but more refined. \u00a0The story is darker, crisper. \u00a0The acting more modernized (for that time). \u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>plot lines<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>dialogue<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0are more acceptable to the\u00a0modern\u00a0<\/span>palette<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">. \u00a0It is\u00a0sweeping\u00a0<\/span>grandeur<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0in every sense of the\u00a0word. \u00a0Not as financially\u00a0<\/span>successful<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0as\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"font-family: inherit\">The Ten Commandments<\/i><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">, nonetheless it was still the biggest movie of the year, and it earned its Oscars in ways that many feel\u00a0<\/span><i>Titanic<\/i><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><i>\u00a0<\/i>never really did.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">The story looks like a Jewish story about a Jewish man betrayed by his Roman friend. \u00a0But in the end, the\u00a0<\/span>finale<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0is squarely on the shoulders of Jesus. \u00a0Like <i>The Ten Commandments<\/i>, the actual biblical story is\u00a0almost off to the side of the fictionalized plot of lovers and friends. \u00a0But where Commandments ends at Sinai, Ben Hur ends at the foot of the Cross. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">And along the way, we are treated to a movie that almost takes its breathtaking\u00a0<\/span>splendor<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0for granted. \u00a0If\u00a0Commandments seems to stand up and say \u2018look how awesome this is\u2019, Ben Hur just assumes it\u2019s there. \u00a0That is, of course, until the legendary Chariot Race. One of the greatest action sequences ever filmed, or likely ever will be. \u00a0If you see nothing else, you must see the Chariot Race. \u00a0Seeing Heston\u2019s massive shoulders holding the reigns (he was able to do much of the actual heavy lifting himself during the filming), it\u2019s easy to see why he was the go to choice for this era of epics. \u00a0An era that would soon pass, but leave a legacy that few films in recent years\u00a0<\/span>have<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0come close to matching.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;font-size: large\"><b>King of Kings (Silent Version)<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\">\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/715\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-g6JJLqSXcrM\/VSlLhUWek4I\/AAAAAAAAGNM\/D5BH7J3SYtA\/s1600\/King%20of%20Kigns.jpg\" style=\"clear: left;float: left;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-right: 1em\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/715\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-g6JJLqSXcrM\/VSlLhUWek4I\/AAAAAAAAGNM\/D5BH7J3SYtA\/s1600\/King%20of%20Kigns.jpg\" height=\"266\" width=\"400\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Many years ago, while I was a pastor, this showed late one night before Easter Sunday. \u00a0I couldn\u2019t sleep, since Easter was always a long, busy day. \u00a0We had the sunrise service, and I had to be there around 4:30 AM to get things ready. \u00a0And as usual, I couldn\u2019t get to sleep. \u00a0So I sat up and watched a movie I found out later was the original <i>King of Kings<\/i>, by a younger Cecil B. DeMille. \u00a0Just like his silent <i>Ten Commandments<\/i>, this was an homage to traditional bible stories without the critical scholarship or post-modern minimalism. \u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\">I don\u2019t know why, but there was something about that. \u00a0It was just old Bible revival portrayals of the events. \u00a0When Jesus dies, there\u2019s an earthquake. \u00a0There\u2019s supernatural. \u00a0There\u2019s big miracles. \u00a0This is dispensing with speculation and just \u00a0showing what the Bible says happened. \u00a0The Bible says there was an earthquake. \u00a0It happened. \u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\">Something about that was strangely refreshing. \u00a0Oddly enough, that was one of those things that kindled in me a yearning for a more historic approach to the Faith than I found even in Evangelical Christianity, one that eventually brought me into communion with the Catholic Church. I say oddly, because of course the Catholic Church accepts a modern take on most of the Bible in ways that would shame all but the most liberal theologians in most Protestant seminaries. \u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\">Nonetheless, if you get the chance, watch this. \u00a0Sit back and see a movie made between the first round of destruction that industrialization and post-Christian thinking brought by way of the Second World War, the Nuclear Age, and the crumbling of Western Civilization.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><br><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><b><span style=\"font-size: large\">It\u2019s the Easter Beagle Charlie Brown<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\">\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/715\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-HvHFsHzdJeI\/VSlKkUs26gI\/AAAAAAAAGNA\/nds5sfYpMQI\/s1600\/Easter%20Beagle.jpg\" style=\"clear: left;float: left;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-right: 1em\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/715\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-HvHFsHzdJeI\/VSlKkUs26gI\/AAAAAAAAGNA\/nds5sfYpMQI\/s1600\/Easter%20Beagle.jpg\" height=\"300\" width=\"400\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">If there was ever need for evidence that Charles Schultz had lost his edge, it is this. \u00a0We watch this because there just isn\u2019t any Easter specials for kids that don\u2019t have weird monster rabbits with metal tails. \u00a0Following the course of the seasonal year, this is the fourth and last Peanuts special we watch until the Fall. And how different, and inferior, it is.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0.0001pt\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">Plagued by the focus on the unfortunate character of\u00a0<\/span>Peppermint<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">\u00a0Patty, and an equal focus on Snoopy and his\u00a0sidekick Woodstock, the special just durps about, bouncing from set up to joke and set up to joke. \u00a0Charlie Brown was almost\u00a0<\/span>incidental<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">.
