First we had Argo<\/i>, a movie that clearly dramatizes events, but does so for the benefit of the US and \u2013 get this \u2013 the CIA! \u00a0Like my boys said, that\u2019s like a movie that makes the Gestapo look like heroes. \u00a0 Then we had Unbroken<\/i>, by Angelina Jolie. \u00a0A movie that portrays the US as heroes and the Japanese \u2013 get this \u2013 as the bad guys. \u00a0Almost brutal. \u00a0Almost Nazi like in their cruelty. \u00a0A portrayal some vaguely admit, but prefer to keep under the bushel in order to emphasize the helpless peace loving spirit of Japan in August 1945. \u00a0And now we have The Sniper<\/i>. \u00a0A film by political and economic conservative Clint Eastwood, that looks at the complexities of a US soldier who is a sniper, and actually shows the insurgents as baddies.<\/p>\n
What the hell! \u00a0We\u2019re supposed to be the bad guys. \u00a0We nuke babies. \u00a0We slaughter darkies. \u00a0We own slaves and butcher Indians <\/strike>Native Americans. \u00a0We cause wars. \u00a0We interfere. \u00a0When people are forced to fly jets into our skyscrapers filled with Eichmanns <\/strike>innocent civilians, we\u2019re the ones that made them hate us.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s with this? <\/p>\n
My boys and my wife and I watched Argo <\/i>together last night. \u00a0They were stunned. \u00a0Not because they thought it was an historical treatise on the events. \u00a0But because it dared to make us out to be the good guys. \u00a0Yes, it did it\u2019s job in showing we weren\u2019t always clean and without blame in events. \u00a0But we \u2013 and the CIA! \u2013 were actually the heroes. \u00a0Other countries objected, it wasn\u2019t multi-cultural enough, how dare an actor who isn\u2019t Mexican portray a person, etc., etc. \u00a0 But my boys were stunned. \u00a0They said they\u2019re not used to that. \u00a0Throughout their life, we\u2019re the bad guys. \u00a0The US. \u00a0Our Founding Racists <\/strike>Fathers. \u00a0Our armies. \u00a0Our leaders. \u00a0Our racist citizens. \u00a0That\u2019s supposed to be the emphasis. \u00a0And that\u2019s what my boys have seen in their culture, their media, their schools and textbooks. <\/p>\n
Like I told my boys as we watched Argo<\/i>, and I described the low spirits of the day, there were actually people then who said the best days of the US were behind us. \u00a0That was an actual POV. \u00a0One of my sons piped up and said that\u2019s not what they say today. \u00a0Today, the motto is that the US never had any best days, we were always evil, wrong, and bad. \u00a0Our only hope is to make amends and repent and put the evils of the past behind us. \u00a0And yet these movies suggest otherwise.<\/p>\n
