Arthur Ranking, Jr. has died<\/a>. \u00a0He was 89. \u00a0What can one say about a person who helped to shape an entire world for young people of my generation? \u00a0Just this last Sunday, we settled in for our annual viewing of Rankin and Bass\u2019s\u00a0The Hobbit<\/i>. \u00a0It\u2019s still, IMHO, the best adaptation of any of Tolkien\u2019s works to date \u2013 Jackson\u2019s bloated attempts included. <\/p>\n

But it was more than just Hobbits. \u00a0Rankin and Bass had their finger on that strange mixture of post-war Boomer culture and various cultural traditions and milestones. \u00a0Using varying mediums to convey stories, they brought a host of famous characters to life and defined how an entire generation visualized at least the secular spin on the Christmas holidays.\u00a0<\/div>\n

For my part, aside from The Hobbit, I\u2019ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the Little Drummer Boy. \u00a0Others need no introduction. \u00a0Rudolph kicked off the whole Christmas Specials for Kids genre, and became one of many specials around which kids my age centered their calendars on the long march leading up to that day of days. \u00a0<\/div>\n

Anyway, a big thank you for all the memories, the good times and the great stories. \u00a0<\/div>\n
