I always say.\u00a0 There\u2019s a story<\/a> tossed about that a Catholic LGBT group wrote a letter to Pope Francis, and Pope Francis responded.\u00a0 Nothing there.\u00a0 The contents of both letters aren\u2019t being revealed.\u00a0 OK.\u00a0 The press, with that disclaimer, then goes on to say what some sources say is in Pope Francis\u2019s letter, including a \u201cblessing\u201d for the group Kairos.\u00a0\u00a0 What that means we\u2019re left to guess. <\/p>\n

Just who the group Kairos is, I\u2019m not sure.\u00a0 Last I heard it was a prison ministry, but then the term Kairos isn\u2019t copyrighted.\u00a0 I really don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Based on traditional Catholic teaching, the Pope can\u2019t \u2018change Church teaching.\u2019\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t mean a pope can\u2019t suck or take the Church into areas that create no end of problems and give two black eyes to the Gospel.\u00a0 It remains to be seen with Pope Francis.\u00a0 In our post-modern app-depth generation, it\u2019s probably entirely possible to construct a Church based on clear 2000 year old teachings while embracing the post-Christian secular Left.\u00a0 After all, not a few Protestant traditions have done just that.\u00a0 They\u2019ve not technically changed much.\u00a0 But in practice they are barely in any way connected to the Faith of their fathers.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

I remember a seminary professor who told us a story.\u00a0 He was in Germany years and years ago.\u00a0 It was Easter.\u00a0 He attended the Easter services.\u00a0 The preacher that morning was none other than Rudolf Bultmann, champion of the demythologizing of the New Testament.\u00a0 That is, rather than dismiss everything that sniffs of supernatural in the manner of Jefferson, embrace the fact that the New Testament is just one big, awesome myth.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

And yet, on that Easter Sunday, while my professor watched in awe, Bultmann gave a sermon that would shame Billy Graham.\u00a0 He opened his arms and proclaimed just how Jesus loved the world enough to die for our sins, only to raise from the dead and give eternal life to all.\u00a0 Lesson.\u00a0 In our age, perhaps in any age,\u00a0it\u2019s entirely possible for some to proclaim one thing and really, really \u2013 I mean really \u2013 mean it within a completely different context than face value might suggest. <\/p>\n

Again, we\u2019ll see.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s nothing.\u00a0 Maybe Pope Francis did no such thing.\u00a0 Or maybe it\u2019s Francis continuing what the Church began in Vatican II, trying to adjust and adapt to\u00a0the norms and standards of the victorious post-Christian Left.\u00a0 But I am reminded of this<\/a> \u2013 possibly the best evaluation of the current \u2018try to right the wrongs of the West\u2019 strategy of the Church: <\/p>\n

When the Church is throwing out tools, they should be of less use to her outright enemies than to winnable neutrals.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I can\u2019t top that.\u00a0 We\u2019ll see if it\u2019s a lesson the Church actually needs, or if it is one the Church has any intention of heeding. <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
