Looks like\u00a0archaeologists\u00a0are busy. \u00a0In one story<\/a>, they\u2019ve unearthed a medieval cookbook. \u00a0FWIW, medieval cooking was not altogether bad. \u00a0A medievalist myself, we have our own versions of middle ages cooking, and sometimes the taste can be pretty memorable. \u00a0Nonetheless, this is the real deal. \u00a0And I should mention I have several cookbooks from the monastic\u00a0calendar\u00a0year as well. Yummy.<\/p>\n

The second<\/a> deals with finding remains of a ship from \u2013 get this \u2013 the First Punic War. \u00a0That\u2019s the First Punic War. \u00a0Amazing. \u00a0The wars that brought Rome in its assent headlong against ancient Carthage (the Roman name for that being Punici<\/i>, which is where we get the names of the wars), is on oft forgotten, but\u00a0immensely\u00a0important, historical crisis that changed the course of human history. \u00a0They established Rome as the power of the Mediterranean, and changed the relationship of North Africa in a way that would have\u00a0repercussions\u00a0up to the present day.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t history, of course. \u00a0This is\u00a0archaeology.\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s up to us historians to look at the rocks and pots and ships\u2019 bows and make a story of it. \u00a0At our best, we do it as faithfully to the sources as possible. \u00a0But sometimes, it\u2019s nice to step back and look. \u00a0A cookbook, a ship\u2019s ram. \u00a0One a source of bettering the fare of a restrictive diet. \u00a0The other, a weapon of war that met its end, probably with hundreds of hapless slaves chained to the decks, dying one of the most agonizing ways a human can die, as their ship slipped below the waves. <\/p>\n

Remember kids, history through the window brightly. \u00a0Look out your window, and that\u2019s what the world looked like to them, with a few\u00a0architectural\u00a0 and\u00a0engineering\u00a0differences. \u00a0They weren\u2019t just waiting to be topics for\u00a0archaeology\u00a0or stats in a war book. \u00a0They lived. \u00a0Just like we live today. <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
