I\u2019ve been thinking on a couple of posts regarding Roger Ebert\u2019s death. \u00a0I\u2019ve thought of that, as I remember the Marc Barnes post on Andy Warhol, and much of the praise and adoration given to Christopher Hitchens on his passing. \u00a0I remember this post <\/a>I did when thinking about this rather Catholic phenomenon. <\/p>\n

And my little jab I just threw out<\/a> came back at me, and has given me a moment to reflect. \u00a0What does it say if we believe that my righteous standing before God, or my worth as a Catholic, is only summed up in my views on gun control, or the economic budget, or our policies in the Middle East? \u00a0Things I have little to no say in, and quite frankly, may or may not directly impact me anyway? <\/p>\n

The idea that it\u2019s basically our politics that declares our\u00a0righteousness\u00a0\u2013 for that\u2019s the platform through which these issues are being debated \u2013 rather than how I get up and live my life on a daily basis has got to be a bad trend. \u00a0And it might explain why every single time there is a study or a poll (for what those are worth),\u00a0Catholics\u00a0come in dead last where you want them to be first, and vice versa. \u00a0Only in giving do Catholics rise head and\u00a0shoulders\u00a0above others. \u00a0In virtually every other capacity, they lag behind. <\/p>\n

If we\u2019ve convinced ourselves that it\u2019s only in our\u00a0opinions\u00a0of some lofty geopolitical strategic policy that our holiness is demonstrated, rather than the lives we live, then I could imagine why those polls come out the way they do. \u00a0Never mind the lousy witness. \u00a0News to Catholics: party-boy Catholic wins few converts. Put that in\u00a0the\u00a0New Evangelization pipe and smoke it.<\/p>\n

So what is this pure, good religion that should indicate where we our in our earthly pilgrimage? \u00a0Is it really what we think about America\u2019s foreign policy or which party to reject in the next election? \u00a0Is that what\u00a0separates\u00a0the sheep and the goats? \u00a0Here\u2019s a couple clips from the good old Scriptures, still a decent source for guidance and practical teaching when it comes to figuring out what God might actually want from us. \u00a0It helped me become Catholic. \u00a0Perhaps it can help me become a good Catholic. <\/p>\n

Pure and undefiled religion\u00a0<\/span>A<\/a>)\u201d><\/sup><\/i>in the sight of\u00a0<\/span>our<\/span>\u00a0God and Father is this: to\u00a0<\/span>B<\/a>)\u201d><\/sup><\/i>visit\u00a0<\/span>C<\/a>)\u201d><\/sup><\/i>orphans and widows in their distress,\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0to keep oneself unstained\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span>by\u00a0<\/span>D<\/a>)\u201d><\/sup><\/i>the world. \u00a0<\/i>James 1.27<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span><\/i>\u201cI urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable, or well pleasing and perfect.\u201d<\/i> Romans 12.1-2<\/span><\/span>

<\/span><\/span>Nope, nothing about my views on the Ryan budget or what we should do with Syria. \u00a0 A lot on what I should do in my day to day living as it relates to God and everyone else. \u00a0Sure, right\u00a0attitudes\u00a0about war and the\u00a0economy\u00a0could easily fit in there. \u00a0But just as easily could the way I act on a daily basis. \u00a0It would seem to be all or nothing, not some and not the other. \u00a0At least that\u2019s how I see it. <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
