I posted yesterday<\/a> in response to the unbridled hatred of the US that some Catholics possess. \u00a0I pointed out that Mark Shea\u2019s blog has become quite the gathering place for those who are quite proud of being Catholics\u00a0who despise and loath\u00a0<\/span>everything\u00a0to do with America, if not Americans. \u00a0To wit:<\/span><\/p>\n

Say what you wish, Stu, but at least Canadiens aren\u2019t identified by their revolting nature.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sure, it\u2019s in\u00a0response\u00a0to a dig at Canadians that heavily criticizes\u00a0the initial comment by lumping all Canadians together as ones who would say such a thing. \u00a0But still, it\u2019s nice to know there are\u00a0thoughtful\u00a0internet Catholics who\u00a0believe\u00a0we are revolting by our very nature. \u00a0 Still, this is from the fellow<\/a> who said children slaughtered by American Indians got what they got for being part of the evil White Protestant Invaders. \u00a0Imagine saying that on Mark\u2019s blog about Japanese children in Hiroshima and imagine how long you\u2019d last (I think both things would be repugnant to say). \u00a0A reminder why the Catholic Church has such a massive stack of bodies in its 2000 year old wake.<\/p>\n

Anyhoo, the initial comment on Mark\u2019s post was what got me to thinking. \u00a0It was posted by a regular reader whose dislike of the US is pretty well documented. \u00a0Fair enough. \u00a0The\u00a0question\u00a0was, why is Mark\u2019s blog such a magnet for the \u201cHate America Catholics!\u201d crowd? \u00a0I stated that I don\u2019t believe Mark is there, yet. \u00a0But then, in response to that little \u2018let\u2019s assume America sucks and is evil\u2019 dig, Mark posted his own\u00a0response:<\/p>\n

Actually, I like your comment just fine. Yes, his remarks are of a piece with the utopian arrogance that dominates the United States.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Uh huh. \u00a0So there you go. \u00a0Mark gives a high five kudos to the whole \u2018no doubt the evil US will lead a coup to depose the Pope since it\u2019s so evil and arrogant\u2019 assumption. \u00a0Is there wiggle room? \u00a0Could Mark argue he doesn\u2019t have some loathing and contempt for everything to do with the US? \u00a0Is there, shall we say, room for plausible deniability? Again, no problem with\u00a0criticizing\u00a0America. \u00a0But this is criticizing America with the same balance and insight that Jack Chick brings to his disagreements with the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n

No, scratch that. \u00a0In it all, I\u2019m actually convinced that Jack Chick thinks he\u2019s doing the right thing and really wants Catholics\u00a0to\u00a0save themselves from certain damnation. \u00a0The comments I\u2019m\u00a0increasingly\u00a0seeing on Mark\u2019s site suggest nothing of the sort. \u00a0They merely suggest, well, a hatred of the US more in line with a Fred Phelps than Chick. \u00a0For Phelps gives no indication he has any concern or desire for those he hates to be anything other than those he hates. \u00a0And Mark, who once rallied around the flag and proclaimed that while we must be prepared to correct our nation, we should never cease loving our nation as an\u00a0extension\u00a0of the\u00a0command\u00a0to love our neighbors? \u00a0Who once shouted down those too critical of our nation as violating that very principle? Who now has a regular litany of visitors ready to proclaim \u2018America sucks, it\u2019s evil, stupid, always has been, it\u2019s\u00a0worthless\u00a0 it\u2019s the cause of all suffering, American\u2019s are dolts and evil losers, who cares if its rotten kids were\u00a0slaughtered\u00a0by Indians!\u2019? \u00a0I give you hope:<\/p>\n

To criticize America with the mind of the Christ is a duty of every American Christian. But, since 9\/11, many more Christians and many Americans now recognize that all such criticism should be done with reverence and gratitude for the truly great country this is. <\/b>(Emphasis mine)<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

America! America!
