I\u2019m a fan of the film The Devil and Daniel Webster<\/i>, based on the short story by Stephen Vincent Benet.\u00a0In addition to the great Walter Huston\u2019s delightfully dapper turn as old Scratch himself, it oozes with a realistic expression of old Americanism and American\u00a0exceptionalism. \u00a0On one hand, there is more apple pie patriotism than in a glass case at Der Dutchman. \u00a0On the other hand, it\u2019s not afraid \u2013 through old Scratch\u2019s counter punches \u2013 to point out the meaner side of America\u2019s history. \u00a0Probably a better take on what Americans have traditionally thought of their country than the counterculture myth<\/a> of the 60s and beyond.<\/p>\n

Anyway, I received a link to an\u00a0interesting\u00a0post that helps unpack the famous jury of the damned. \u00a0The names are tossed out rather quickly, and unless you are a student of that period in American history, you\u2019ll probably get lost past Arnold. \u00a0So here it is, the place to go to find out about just who those infernal jurors are, starting with Mr. Thomas Dale<\/a>.<\/p>\n
