And have our cultural movers and shakers in an a tizzy<\/a>. \u00a0Excuse me for speaking on behalf of someone who struggles a bit with keeping my own weight down. \u00a0I\u2019ve lost quite a bit of weight over the years, but could still probably lose another twenty pounds or so (but no more). \u00a0But there are two, well three, reasons I\u2019m only so-so about the whole \u2018disgusting, fat slob Americans\u2019 pandemic of modern\u00a0years. \u00a0Well, five reasons really. \u00a0Here we go:<\/p>\n

1. Americans love to trash Americans. \u00a0It\u2019s our national\u00a0pastime,\u00a0officially replacing steroids in baseball back in 2004. \u00a0If every American looked to be\u00a0chiseled\u00a0from Greek marble, we\u2019d find something else to complain about our inherent inferiority. \u00a0It\u2019s the dark, evil twin of\u00a0American Exceptionalism. <\/p>\n

2. For all the talk of the horrors and costs and risks of being overweight, we hear not a\u00a0peep\u00a0about the horrors and costs of sexual depravity and excess. We won\u2019t even discuss the problems inherent to male homosexual sexuality.<\/p>\n

3. It wasn\u2019t too long ago, in the 1990s, when we were awash in story after story of young people, usually young women, dying\u00a0because\u00a0of\u00a0anorexia\u00a0and bulimia, brought about by the\u00a0insistence\u00a0that everyone look like they belong in a Playboy magazine centerfold with a staple in their navel. It first hit with the untimely death of the wonderful Karen\u00a0Carpenter, and picked up speed until, by the late 90s, we finally said enough!<\/p>\n

4. Many of the ones I\u2019ve seen interviewed, including a nutritionist I just saw on a cable news channel (which I won\u2019t mention out of niceness sake, but who gave me the idea for this blog post), look like those\u00a0emaciated\u00a0models from the 90s that caused the backlash against focusing on being underweight. Really. \u00a0I had said something entirely cruel, but erased it. \u00a0But if I didn\u2019t know any better, I would have thought she was sick.<\/p>\n

5. Our youngest son is nine years younger than our next youngest. \u00a0I would say 40% of the things doctors told us to do nine years ago they now scream and say don\u2019t do it, it could kill your kid. \u00a0Or you must do now who they told you never, ever do nine years ago. \u00a0Just the whiplash\u00a0inducing\u00a0shift is enough to remind me that for all the talk of\u00a0disgusting\u00a0fat people who should use\u00a0separate\u00a0drinking fountains, it\u2019s really just a fad.<\/p>\n

None of this is to say I don\u2019t recognize that there are health concerns with being overweight. \u00a0I just realize that, like everything else in our post-cold war country, we\u2019ve got to find the latest \u201cOH NO! \u00a0We\u2019re all going to die!\u201d \u00a0In fact, I can\u2019t keep up with all the things that will be killing us. So while I encourage everyone to eat right, exercise, and try to keep weight down if at all possible, I\u2019m also reminded that since we ended segregation,\u00a0temporarily\u00a0won the Cold War, and let gays out of the closet, we\u2019ve been scrapping and crawling looking for someone we can hang a giant sign around the neck and declare: Thank you God you didn\u2019t make me like them\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
