So in an interview about gun control<\/a>, President Obama said that gun control advocates need to listen more. \u00a0Here\u2019s a snip:<\/p>\n

Obama says he has \u201ca profound respect\u201d for the tradition of hunting that dates back for generations.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cAnd I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake. Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

How about that? \u00a0I know he\u2019s narrowed it to hunting only, but still. It\u2019s sure not been the case since Sandy Hook. \u00a0Almost immediate following that horrible day, you could see a profound disrespect for gun owners, no matter what anyone was saying. \u00a0Some came out and said it of course. \u00a0Gun owners are evil scum, screw them.<\/p>\n

Others were more\u00a0elusive\u00a0 insisting they were saying no such thing while more or less saying just that when the opportunity arose. \u00a0Point out that measures could hinder 2nd Amendment rights,\u00a0inconvenience\u00a0gun owners, harm gun owners? \u00a0Who cares, the hell with them, that\u2019s their problem. \u00a0I\u2019ll give credit to those who came out and said guns and gun owners were evil and needed eradicated from our national fabric. \u00a0At least they were honest.<\/p>\n

And in this case, so is President Obama. \u00a0While the pendulum has\u00a0definitely\u00a0swung in favor of sweeping gun control measures, even he is clever, wise, or simply good enough to\u00a0realize\u00a0there is a limit. \u00a0Something it would be nice to see as the debate continues to take place, even in the Catholic blogosphere, as another Catholic commenter noticed regarding the tenor of the conversation<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Or, maybe after several weeks of being demonized with comparisons to Nazis, slave owners, segregationists, or flat-out being called un-Catholic nutty survivalists or \u201cMoral Escapists\u201d (hey, new one!) by their brothers and sisters, they\u2019re a little sensitive right now. It\u2019s especially trying when the invective comes from people who are talking out their asses, but feel the need to exert Absolute Moral Authority anyway.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And sad to say, at least in some quarters and forums, that\u2019s exactly what\u2019s being said, or at least inferred. \u00a0And in some cases, long before Newtown.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
