I was reading through this post on Marc Barnes\u2019 blog<\/a>. \u00a0The focus is on the abortion culture. \u00a0He found what many have noticed. \u00a0I\u2019ll leave folks to read it and take things in. \u00a0The part that got me was this little quip:<\/p>\n

I prefer telling people I support the abolition of abortion than that I\u2019m \u201cpro-life\u201d, given that there\u2019s plenty of people who support abolition but aren\u2019t remotely \u201cpro-life\u201d when it comes to the death penalty, drone attacks or unjust war<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now, my problem is this: what does Marc, and others, mean by the\u00a0the\u00a0death penalty negates a pro-life Catholic? \u00a0When? \u00a0How? Has the Church officially said the Death Penalty is an evil? \u00a0Is it now banned? \u00a0For most of its history, the Church allowed for the use of Capital punishment. \u00a0Only in recent decades has that turned around. \u00a0Perhaps its inevitable that it will eventually reject such practices. \u00a0Many Orthodox Churches have already come out and all but officially\u00a0banished\u00a0the use of executions for any reason. \u00a0Certainly modern liberalism rejects capital punishment of any sort, but that\u2019s for different reasons.<\/p>\n

Still, no matter what, I\u2019m a little itchy about saying that anyone regarding the death penalty may not be\u00a0sincerely\u00a0pro-life. \u00a0Same with war actually, but that\u2019s for another post. \u00a0Right now, I\u2019m curious. \u00a0What does it mean to say they aren\u2019t? \u00a0Does he mean those who love the smell of napalm in the morning? \u00a0That group of people who apparently have fantasies about torturing innocent babies? \u00a0Who?<\/p>\n

There\u2019s something strange in the Catholic blogosphere that I\u2019ve not noticed in Protestant counterparts, and I\u2019m having a hard time getting my head around it. \u00a0There\u2019s a sort of vague\u00a0judgmentalism\u00a0that you can\u2019t pin down. \u00a0A \u2018they be the villains\u2019 without the need to define just who the \u2018they\u2019 is. \u00a0In fact, when I\u2019ve seen people\u00a0protest such swipes, those who have made such statements will\u00a0back off and say \u2018I\u2019m not saying anyone who supports the death penalty\u2019 yadda, yadda, yadda. \u00a0And yet, it\u2019s said. \u00a0Even when the Church has not, as far as I know, changed its 2000 year long approach to the subject. \u00a0Will it? \u00a0Probably. \u00a0Based on the trends I\u2019m noticing. \u00a0But even if it does, is there really something wrong with people who believe what the\u00a0Church\u00a0always\u00a0taught\u00a0until\u00a0a couple years ago? \u00a0And if not, shouldn\u2019t we define our statements a little better, rather than throw them out there without any qualifiers? \u00a0And if so, what\u2019s it say about the Church itself?<\/p>\n

Not that Mr. Barnes is the only one who does it. \u00a0It simply caught my eye as I read over his piece today.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
