<\/a><\/div>\nI don\u2019t know why, but I thought I would mention that one of my earliest school memories comes from learning the song I Saw Three Ships<\/i> when I was in first grade. \u00a0It was December, 1973. \u00a0Richard Nixon was president as the Watergate Scandal was picking up steam. \u00a0The Beatles had broken up three years earlier. \u00a0The American Psychiatric Association had just removed\u00a0homosexuality\u00a0from its list of mental disorders (so it must be true). \u00a0And this little seven year old didn\u2019t know any of it. \u00a0Well, I had heard the adults talking about something happening around a water gate, but I couldn\u2019t put any of it together.<\/p>\n
And in Mrs. Woods\u2019 northwestern corner classroom, with the old metal chair-desks pushed around into a large circle, the class gathered in the center to learn new songs. \u00a0I Saw Three Ships <\/i>wasn\u2019t on any of the old Christmas records we listened to, and to be honest, I don\u2019t think I recalled ever hearing it before. \u00a0But I remember on that grey, December day, I learned a song about some things that I was only vaguely aware of (FWIW, for some reason all of my memories about school when I was young seem to imagine a grey,\u00a0overcast\u00a0or rainy day). <\/p>\n
Don\u2019t know if this means anything or nothing at all. \u00a0Maybe it\u2019s just how things have changed, for I seriously doubt a public elementary school would teach the kids that song today. \u00a0Perhaps it\u2019s the irony of the events surrounding me and how out of touch I was. \u00a0I don\u2019t know. \u00a0I just know it\u2019s a memory, and a fond one, of things long ago, faded into my memory, only accessible now at random times or seasons.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
