On a gray November day that is. \u00a0So the good news is that before our economic plight began its final descent, when we still were able to get by and, with some scrounging, afford a few extras, we\u00a0purchased\u00a0our annual\u00a0tickets\u00a0to the Ohio State Buckeyes football game, as well as a special super deal for the upcoming BalletMet\u00a0performance\u00a0of the Nutcracker. \u00a0More on that later. \u00a0As it is, my status as alumnus allows us two football tickets a year for a discounted price. \u00a0Of\u00a0course\u00a0the seats reflect the price, allowing us to find out what it might be like at high\u00a0altitudes\u00a0without\u00a0oxygen.\u00a0<\/div>\n
In the day, as an alumnus, you received two tickets \u2013 eventually. \u00a0At first you might not qualify, but the longer you were an alumnus, the more likely you would get tickets. \u00a0Plus \u2013 and this is important \u2013 the longer you got tickets, the better they would be. \u00a0Oh, they would never be team side 50 yard line, but they would get better. \u00a0But all that changed a few years ago, when under Mr. Gee\u2019s emphasis on money to the exclusion of all other possible priorities, the tickets were moved to a flat\u00a0lottery\u00a0 with everyone having a 10% chance of being booted in any given\u00a0year\u00a0 \u00a0And if you get tickets? \u00a0Well, to make room for the important people (read: those with boatloads of money), you are relegated to the\u00a0stratosphere,\u00a0using all your optical powers to discern what is happening on the field far, far below.\u00a0<\/div>\n

This year, with the game at 3:30, and in November (itself a treat, as most alumni tickets are for the earlier,\u00a0exhibition\u00a0games), I knew it would be different. It was. \u00a0My oldest, not wanting to use up his final game with me (each boy gets 3), deferred to our 7th grader who, at first reluctant, went ahead and took the slot. \u00a0Since OSU is not bowl\u00a0eligible\u00a0 they weren\u2019t crazy about the season, but the older two had\u00a0already\u00a0used up two games\u00a0each\u00a0 \u00a0Our 7th grader, however, had only gone once, and so we figured he would still have another year down the road. \u00a0So he went.<\/div>\n

What a day. \u00a0What a chance to see the changes. \u00a0The big news was that the power in the stadium went out before the game, and stayed off until just into the start of the game. \u00a0Otherwise, it was great fun. \u00a0It always is. \u00a0Even as the school changes, builds, tears down, and adapts to the march of time, I can always count on my boys to make the event special. \u00a0With our 7th grader, who has a built in knack for enjoying anything at any time, it\u2019s not hard to have fun at all. \u00a0Thanks for the memories, and we\u2019ll have a\u00a0more\u00a0normal, less goofy time the next time!<\/div>\n
