With this being the last day of September, and a full moon shining over the lands, we felt it was appropriate to launch into the beginning of the Holiday Season. \u00a0That, to the Griffeys, encompasses\u00a0everything\u00a0from Halloween season until the end of New Year\u2019s day, or now that we\u2019re Catholic, the 12th day of Christmas. \u00a0Some argue that it really lasts until Easter. \u00a0But certainly, this is the time when our family comes alive, and begins to get some of that excitement that comes with all of the holidays and\u00a0festivities\u00a0that will be thrown our way over the next months.<\/p>\n

At first we didn\u2019t dive in until well into October. \u00a0But with the conflicting and competing schedules due to our boys being involved in multiple activities, we started moving the date to the first of the month. \u00a0Likewise, we actually start with \u2018autumnal activities\u2019 as early as\u00a0September\u00a0 \u00a0Still, we reserve particular traditions that my wife and I began when we were first married, and carried on as we added to the numbers of our family.<\/p>\n

<\/a>The order may vary, the things we choose to do or not based on a variety of things such as weather and money, but there are certain things we always, and I mean always, do. \u00a0First off is the kick-off special, typically\u00a0reserved\u00a0for the first of October, but again\u00a0this\u00a0year ending the month of September. \u00a0That is a special showing of an old Walt Disney VCR special called Halloween Haunts<\/i>. \u00a0It featured three old shorts from the long ago days of Disney\u00a0cartoons\u00a0in theaters, preceded by a rousing video rendition of Grim Grinning Ghosts<\/i>. \u00a0The first episode is Pluto\u2019s Judgement Day<\/i>, a rather morbid reminder of the power that traditional religious ideals held on the population, as Mickey\u2019s dog Pluto dreams of being cast into Hell itself, due to his sadistic desire to torture\u00a0kittens\u00a0 \u00a0After a mock trial by a host of\u00a0felines\u00a0 Pluto is condemned to the flames, until a real ember from the fireplace wakes him and makes him see the light of cat-love.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

The next cartoon is Lonesome Ghosts<\/i>, the cartoon that no doubt gave Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis food for thought, as a trio of underemployed ghost hunters are called to an\u00a0abandoned\u00a0mansion to purge the location of its spectral\u00a0inhabitants\u00a0 \u00a0Of\u00a0course\u00a0the ones who called them were the ghosts themselves, but the joke is on them as the\u00a0intrepid\u00a0ghost hunters, who aren\u2019t scared of no ghosts, turn the tables on their hosts. \u00a0Finally comes Trick of Treat<\/i>, the post-war\u00a0celebration\u00a0of the whole Trick or Treat fad that was exploding on the back of America\u2019s\u00a0new found\u00a0commercial prosperity. \u00a0Trick or Treat had always been around, but now with America\u2019s abundant wealth, it took on a new level of commercial emphases, and Disney, never one to miss the latest, spun this yarn of Donald\u2019s tricks and traps to cash in on the\u00a0phenomenon\u00a0 <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Finally, with time to spare and a youngster wanting more, we decided to pull out another Halloween tradition: Disney\u2019s Legend of Sleepy Hollow<\/i>. \u00a0More faithful to the atmosphere and basic\u00a0plot of Irving\u2019s short story than Burton\u2019s usual cynical and anti-everything take with\u00a0Johnny\u00a0Depp, Disney allows Bing Crosby to walk us through the story of Ichabod Crane,\u00a0and\u00a0his appointment with destiny at the business end of the Headless Horseman\u2019s blade. \u00a0Though not emphasized in the book, Disney adds plenty of Halloween trapping to give it an extra umph, with one of the absolute coolest songs in\u00a0cartoon\u00a0history, courtesy of Brom Bones. <\/p>\n

So that was it. \u00a0Some homemade pizza (cheaper than store bought) and some decorating of the home, along with a little garden harvesting, and we had the\u00a0definite\u00a0feel of holidays a\u2019coming. \u00a0As my oldest said, when we hear the theme to Trick or Treat<\/i>, you just know the months and months of holidays that we have waited for have finally begun. <\/p>\n
