And his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow.  And behold there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking with him. <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>And  Peter answering, said to Jesus: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou  wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and  one for Elias. <\/p>\n<p>And as he was yet speaking, behold a bright cloud  overshadowed them. And lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying: This is my beloved  Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye him. <\/p>\n<p>And the disciples hearing,  fell upon their face, and were very much afraid. And Jesus came and touched  them: and said to them, Arise, and fear not. And they lifting up their eyes saw  no one but only Jesus. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged  them, saying: Tell the vision to no man, till the Son of man be risen from the  dead. <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">Matthew 17:1-8<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit\">So there you have it, that wonderful moment we all long for when God gives us a little glimpse of the beyond, the world past this veil of here and now.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now this got me to thinking, as I am wont to do.\u00a0 I admit I had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/daffeythoughts\/2012\/08\/its-been-long-time.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">a bit of a rant earlier<\/a>, and part of me was tempted to delete the post in hindsight.\u00a0 But I think not.\u00a0 I admit it, it\u2019s frustrating that, at times, it appears I gave everything up in life for this faith that appears to have moved on without me.\u00a0 Looking at the hardships it has placed on my family, on my kids especially, I can get a bit broody.\u00a0 But that\u2019s the way of it, if you think about it.\u00a0 Take for instance the passage that will be read for August 6.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the\u00a0reading ends with Jesus telling his disciples not to tell, which He often did after some flagrant showing of just Who He Was.\u00a0 What follows this passage in Matthew\u2019s Gospel is a little bit of water thrown on the face.\u00a0 Jesus and His three disciples come down from the mountain, who knows what they\u2019re feeling \u2013 elation, rapture, the touch of the Divine.\u00a0 But when they get down, what happens?\u00a0 A man comes to them and begs Jesus to cast out a demon that has possessed his son.\u00a0 He explains that he asked Jesus\u2019 disciples, but they couldn\u2019t do it.\u00a0 And this is what Jesus\u00a0 says:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><em>\u201cYou unbelieving and perverse generation,\u201d Jesus replied, <span class=\"woj\">\u201chow long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><span class=\"woj\">You get that?\u00a0 You can almost hear Jesus sigh in frustration.\u00a0 Coming down from this moment in which Jesus was able to be Who He Was, and show his closest followers a brief glimpse, now he had to come back down and deal with reality.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-family: inherit\"><span class=\"woj\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/715\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-Z6Mtrllkpwc\/UB7_WT3fx2I\/AAAAAAAABH4\/3FGMT2LyfP0\/s1600\/Monte-Cassino-Shrinen-in-fa_200x275.jpg\" style=\"clear: right;float: right;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 1em\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/715\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-Z6Mtrllkpwc\/UB7_WT3fx2I\/AAAAAAAABH4\/3FGMT2LyfP0\/s1600\/Monte-Cassino-Shrinen-in-fa_200x275.jpg\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Well, guess what.\u00a0 Welcome to religious life.\u00a0 That\u2019s something I need to remember.\u00a0 For me, my mountain top experience started at a Catholic monastery in southern Indiana on a cool, cloudy November week in 1999.\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t planned on anything too spiritual (it was a <em>Catholic<\/em> place after all).\u00a0 But once I was there, the presence of God hit me like a ton of bricks.\u00a0 From that point on, I wanted to find a way to capture what I felt in such a small portion, eventually taking steps to enter into the Catholic Church about seven years later.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>There have been some more \u2018Mountaintop\u2019 experiences, I must admit.\u00a0 But there have been some valleys, too.\u00a0 And I have to say, because of the sheer reality of things in the world, it seems more like valley than mountain in the last several years.\u00a0 And yet, that\u2019s how it is.\u00a0 We all wish we could, like Peter, just build a little place in the sun on that mountain and stay there.\u00a0 That\u2019s natural.\u00a0 But that\u2019s not what God calls us to be about.\u00a0 Unlike so much \u2018spritiualism\u2019 of today, that centers on me and how awesomely spiritual I am, God calls us to get down off that mountain and go, go back to the man and the demon possessed boy, and those disciples who just don\u2019t have the faith to do what they should be able to do.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>So as we approach the day set aside to remember the Transfiguration, it\u2019s worth noting that we\u2019ll all have moments in life where we feel like this.\u00a0 And we wish that it wasn\u2019t so.\u00a0 But it\u2019s what we\u2019re called to be about.\u00a0 When we have those\u00a0uplifting spiritual revelations or experiences, great!\u00a0 But remember, they\u2019re really just pit stops, designed to get us back to the meat and potatoes of our religious lives, and that is the living out of God\u2019s love for the sake of all His children.\u00a0 Just a thought on the eve of the Feast of the Transfiguration.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tomorrow, on August 6, is the Feast of the Transfiguration.\u00a0 In short, that\u2019s when the three disciples closest to Jesus during his earthly ministry got a dose of just who and what the Christ really was: And after six days Jesus taketh unto him Peter and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2805,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2511","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>The Transfiguration of Our Lord<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Tomorrow, on August 6, is the Feast of the Transfiguration.&nbsp;
