You will be missed<\/a>.\u00a0 I never knew a world that didn\u2019t have Dick Clark somewhere on a television screen. He was part of the generation that, for good or ill, set in motion the world in which we live; that generation that defined the priorities of the next five or more generations.\u00a0 I\u2019m just old enough to remember the waning days of Guy Lombardo, who would soon be replaced \u2013 much to my parents\u2019 chagrin \u2013 with young,\u00a0charismtic and perptually smiling\u00a0Dick Clark.\u00a0 By the late 70s, he was the face of each New Year.\u00a0
Later, in addition to countless television hosting duties,\u00a0he\u00a0ushured in new entertainment experiments, such as a television show based on bloopers and sometimes practical jokes whose authenticity were, shall we say, suspect at best.\u00a0 Of course, nothing ever matched American Bandstand<\/em>, the icon of an era and the show that overwhelmed any other in its ability to bring the sex, drugs, and rock and roll culture into America\u2019s living rooms, at least\u00a0before the dawning of MTV. <\/p>\n

Nonetheless, Dick Clark himself seemed strangely above it all.\u00a0I don\u2019t know anyone who in any way blamed him for any part of\u00a0the cultural decay wrought by that generation of narcissists and hedonists.\u00a0 Whether it was his charm, his eternal youthfulness, or just the fact that he came across as a likable fellow, he lived and breathed in the eye of the cultural hurricane, yet emerged unscathed with dry clothes and perfect hair.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
