{"id":2770,"date":"2012-02-11T13:23:00","date_gmt":"2012-02-11T13:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/daffeythoughts\/2012\/02\/when-rights-became-majority-based-again.html"},"modified":"2012-02-11T13:23:00","modified_gmt":"2012-02-11T13:23:00","slug":"when-rights-became-majority-based-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/daffeythoughts\/2012\/02\/when-rights-became-majority-based-again.html","title":{"rendered":"When Rights became majority based again"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Remember back in the day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/daffeythoughts\/2012\/02\/california-court-rules-against.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">like a few days ago<\/a>, when things like the right for non-polygamist non-heterosexuals to be married was absolute, and it didn\u2019t matter one rip over how many Americans disagreed, weren\u2019t homosexual, or any such thing?\u00a0 Ever since the Civil Rights era, one of the things pounded into the minds of Americans is the fact that what the majority thinks is never \u2013 EVER \u2013 to be taken into account when considering a person\u2019s rights.\u00a0 That\u2019s why one crank can decide his daughter shouldn\u2019t be forced to say Under God in the pledge of allegiance, and many feel the other 300 million Americans are suddenly irrelevant to the fact that his rights are being violated.<\/p>\n<p>Fair enough.\u00a0 But now, suddenly, we have the much vaunted, worshipped, celebrated and venerated 98%.\u00a0 No, not the 99% which are set in juxtaposition to the 1% of wealthy who are routinely screwing the rest of Americans\u00a0in order to fill their own pockets.\u00a0 This is the 98%, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/98-catholic-women-used-contraception-church-opposes-201936745.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">that is 98% of Catholics who use contraceptives<\/a>.\u00a0 This, of course, in addition to the rest of America that, according to Democrats, enjoys sex as well. <\/p>\n<p>OK, so let\u2019s give the 98% statistic.\u00a0 Let\u2019s assume Americans have sex.\u00a0 Let\u2019s assume they don\u2019t always want it to lead to babies.\u00a0 Let\u2019s assume 98% of Catholics give the high middle one to the Church and use contraceptives anyway.\u00a0 My question?\u00a0 So what the hell does that mean?\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s like saying, as best as I can tell, that since the majority of Americans, including Catholics, don\u2019t seem to give a damn about contraceptives, we shouldn\u2019t care what that 2% think.\u00a0 I mean, that seems to be what they\u2019re saying. I mean, it seems like pro-Obama supporters are reaching back to their pre-civil rights days to remind us that it\u2019s time to resurrect the old \u2018rights by\u00a0majority\u2019 argument. <\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Maybe that\u2019s not what they mean.\u00a0 But if it isn\u2019t, I\u2019d like to know just what they mean by constantly bringing up the legendary 98% of Americans who don\u2019t care what the Catholic Church teaches about contraceptives.\u00a0 If there are 60 million Catholics in the country, and say 30 million are adults, that still means 600,000 Catholics don\u2019t use contraceptives, and may very well see this as a gross imposition on their religious rights.\u00a0 Yet, apparently, that doesn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 Or\u00a0I think.\u00a0If that\u2019s not the point, then what does the 98% mean I wonders?\u00a0 Why do they keep bringing it up?\u00a0 If it\u2019s not to suggest that rights are based on what the majority cares about, then what other purpose is behind bringing it up?\u00a0 Just saying.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember back in the day, like a few days ago, when things like the right
