The revolutionary period of the late 18th\/early 19th century.\u00a0 The Middle Ages, with particular emphasis on northern Europe in the High Middle Ages.\u00a0 And WWII.\u00a0 The last is what got me into history in the first place.\u00a0 Since I had so many relatives who served in that war, it was natural that I would be fascinated by that period.\u00a0 I tended to focus on the Pacific more than Europe.\u00a0 And of all battles, campaigns, and topics, my number one go-to-when-I-have-a-report-to-do subject was Pearl Harbor.\u00a0 I don\u2019t mind saying, there\u2019s not much out there about the attack I haven\u2019t seen, studied, or read (until recent years, I must admit), and I can give an impromptu talk at a museum to fellow costumers with the\u00a0 best of them.\u00a0 That\u2019s also why I laugh at all the silly conspiracy theories, by the way.<\/p>\n

So it came as a shock to see this article<\/a> stating that a famous photo of Japanese women manning fire hoses after the attack was, in fact, not true.\u00a0 It was a real photo, but apparently taken much later \u2013 or so the surviving woman in the photo believes.\u00a0 Now, is that the shock?\u00a0 No.\u00a0\u00a0What shocked me was that the photo existed.\u00a0 Again, I\u2019ve studied, read, bought books, magazines, articles, and documents on the topic.\u00a0 I\u2019ve done reports, essays, and projects centered on the topic.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen just about every photo I thought there was to see.\u00a0 Yet the article says this:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe photograph has had quite the run through the history books.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Never saw it before now.\u00a0 Of course I pretty much ignore the [Non]History Channel at this point, so if it\u2019s there I wouldn\u2019t see it.\u00a0 I\u2019m just taken that the article assumes \u201cwhy, this photo was everywhere\u201d when, in truth, after the hundreds of books and articles I\u2019ve read, and the endless lists of photos I\u2019ve seen, this was the first. <\/p>\n

It says something, that\u2019s for sure.\u00a0 Maybe no matter how much we think we know, there\u2019s always something out there we\u2019ve missed.\u00a0 Or maybe the press has a tendency to over-inflate things in order to continually promote narratives and memes of its choosing.\u00a0 Or a combination of both.\u00a0 Makes me wonder, don\u2019t think I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
