What amazes me is just how far we\u2019ve come in the last couple decades.\u00a0 Naturally there was no Silent Night<\/em> or Away in the Manger<\/em> in the medley (those were replaced by St.\u00a0Lennon\u2019s Happy Xmas (War is Over)<\/em>).\u00a0 This was MTV, and it was still 1986.\u00a0 But can you imagine anything close to this today?\u00a0 <\/p>\n Just the general wholesomeness of it all. This is MTV?\u00a0 The network dedicated to luring our teens into adopting a life of the lowest animal denominator?\u00a0 MTV?\u00a0 This could pass for the Disney Channel.\u00a0 No, strike that.\u00a0 The Disney Channel is more controversial.\u00a0\u00a0Ah back in the day.\u00a0 Then MTV seemed cutting edge, daring, bold, in your face to the older generation \u2013 our little cultural icons were just soooooo cool!\u00a0 Now it looks like my grandma\u2019s tea cosy would have been more shocking.\u00a0 <\/p>\n So in decades to come will the things of today that we yell and fuss about look as tame, as safe as this video does now?\u00a0 Or will we pull up from the dive in time?\u00a0 Personally I hope we pull out of the dive.\u00a0 It sends chills down my spine to imagine what the world would have to\u00a0be like in 20 years in order for things today to look tame.<\/p>\n BTW,\u00a0that\u2019s Mike Nesmith popping off the beard and hat at the end.\u00a0 That was the punchline, since he had famously dodged joining the rest of the Monkees for their 1986 reunion tour.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" That\u2019s like a Harvard Divinity School tent meeting.\u00a0 So I was just stumbling along the Internet, minding my own business, when I came across this little blast from the past.
