status quo<\/em> thinking, to mention some of the actual science, it rested heavily on who Spencer, the NASA scientist in question, actually was.\u00a0 <\/p>\nSeveral times it was mentioned that he is a \u2018Global Warming Skeptic.\u2019\u00a0 And?\u00a0 Why not say the others are \u2018Global Warming Advocates\u2019?\u00a0 It also had a section on \u2018Science and Politics.\u2019\u00a0 Yeah?\u00a0 And?\u00a0 Couldn\u2019t it be true that both sides could be guilty of letting non-scientific factors influence their interpretation of the data?\u00a0 <\/p>\n
That\u2019s what hit me in all of this.\u00a0 First, the headlines said \u2018NASA Study suggests\u2026.\u2019 when in fact the individual was affiliated with NASA, but it doesn\u2019t look like it was a grand\u00a0 NASA conclusion or anything (they\u2019re busy packing up their boxes since we\u2019ll now be hitching rides with the Russians and Chinese for our space travel).\u00a0 Yet most criticisms came, not focused on his actual science, but focusing on him. <\/p>\n
It reminds me of an old Charlie Brown cartoon.\u00a0 The girl Violet comes up to Schroeder and Charlie Brown, who are engaged in a heated debate.\u00a0 She hears what they are saying: \u201cWho plays the piano all the time!\u201d, \u201cYou do, all day at that dumb piano!\u201d, \u201cOh, yeah! Well at least I can catch a baseball!\u201d\u00a0 And on and on they go.\u00a0 Violet then asks them, \u201cWhat are you two arguing about?\u201d\u00a0 They both answer, \u201cWe\u2019re arguing over who was better, Beethoven or Davey Crockett.\u201d\u00a0 As Violet walks away, she gives a quizzical look as she overhears the debate continue: \u201cWho wears a stupid shirt with a stupid stripe?\u201d, \u201cYou do\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s about it.\u00a0 Basically I get the feeling everyone is sure the science agrees with them because as soon as someone suggests either side is wrong, folks just dismiss them by attacking who they are, what \u2018Side\u2019 they are on, or whatever.\u00a0 Which makes it difficult if you think about it.\u00a0 It certainly does me, since I don\u2019t think either side is more prone than the other to let non-scientific purposes enter into their thinking.\u00a0 To paraphrase Longshanks from the movie Braveheart<\/em>: The problem with science is, it\u2019s full of scientists!<\/p>\nI do know it\u2019s been hot this summer after a terrible winter.\u00a0 I know the seasons are overall different than I remember them.\u00a0 I know we do break records, but often they were set decades ago, or we only \u2018nearly\u2019 break the records, meaning there were other times it was worse.\u00a0 I know that the 1930s looked pretty bad as a decade, and many records were set then that still stand.\u00a0 And I know the climate has been changing for eons, and that things like the Medieval warm ups weren\u2019t part of some Northumbrian conspiracy to thwart children of a future age.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
So what to think?\u00a0 My guess there\u2019s truth behind climate change since it\u2019s always been happening.\u00a0 Are all the pollutants and carbon we belch into the air a good thing?\u00a0 Probably not.\u00a0 Can we make changes that could at least reduce our part of the damage?\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 Is the very presence of humanity, as some claim, the culprit?\u00a0 Doubt it, that\u2019s selling this old world pretty cheap, and also typical of the generational arrogance that is so prevalent nowadays.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
Overall, the lesson?\u00a0 My lesson is this: Scientists say we should turn to science to solve our problems.\u00a0 Yet according to scientists into MMGW, the reason we have these problems today is that two hundred years or so ago when the scientists and inventors told everyone to give them a blank check, that they would solve the world\u2019s problems, and nothing could possibly go wrong, we said OK.\u00a0 Lesson learned.\u00a0 Science can certainly help us, but only the greatest generation of fools would say we are on the brink of destruction due to giving science, technology and industry a blank check, and then conclude our only hope is to give science and technology a blank check.\u00a0 Fool me once, after all.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
