Says a lot about America\u2019s Catholic leadership<\/a>.\u00a0 On one hand, it has wisely changed some of the more deplorably limp renderings of the original texts,\u00a0 such as parts of Psalm 23.\u00a0 Though I see they are still preferring a more literalistic translation of the final verse \u2013 \u2018to the end of days\u2019 \u2013 over the traditional, and emotionally powerful, \u2018I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.\u2019\u00a0 For some reason there is also much talk about changing the word \u2018booty\u2019 to \u2018spoils\u2019.\u00a0 I would think the decision to change \u2018ass\u2019 to \u2018donkey\u2019 would have been focused upon, if indeed it has been changed (I would think that if they changed the word \u2018booty\u2019 because of its contemporary connotations, the translators certainly would have caught the other\u2019s alternate meaning in modern discourse!). <\/p>\n

And yet, on the other hand, the most controversial of all, is the decision to render Isaiah 7:14 as \u2018young woman\u2019, rather than \u2018virgin\u2019.\u00a0 It has long been insisted upon by Jewish scholars, and other critics of the Faith,\u00a0that the original Hebrew word was misunderstood by the author of Matthew\u2019s Gospel, and hence he was wrong about the entire \u2018virgin shall concieve\u2019, which he used from the Old Testament\u00a0to validate the virgin birth.\u00a0\u00a0 Naturally, the doctrine of the Virgin Birth hangs on more than that one passage.\u00a0 But it is hardly a settled dispute.\u00a0 Primarily because, idiomatically, the term young maiden may for all intents and purposes still assume a virgin, and therefore the literal translation maybe irrelevant to Matthew\u2019s use of the word.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

This is one of those decisions that could have \u2013 should have \u2013 been solved by leaving the traditionally Christian accepted rendering of \u2018virgin\u2019 in place, with a note underneath explaining that the word could mean young maiden, but the context and usage may not matter after all.\u00a0 Perhaps even a nod to the Septuagint\u2019s usage of the word in its translation to the Greek.\u00a0 But no.\u00a0 The new NAB translation will simply opt to change the word to \u2018youg woman\u2019 (not even the usually suggested \u2018young maiden\u2019), put the word \u2018virgin\u2019 in a footnote, and no doubt cause certain levels of confusion among the faithful.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

As Mark Shea once said many years ago, the Catholic Church has and incorrigible\u00a0knack of obscuring spiritual truths with confusing terminology.\u00a0 It also seems to have the knack of taking the least reader friendly approaches to translating the Bible, choosing not ones that help enforce the doctrines of the Faith, but rather seem to give credence to those outside the faith who have long rejected and critiqued those doctrines.\u00a0 Sigh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
