I\u2019m not optimistic<\/a>.\u00a0 My dislike for the NAB is well known to those who know me. I blogged about it here<\/a>.\u00a0 I realize that any scholar can \u2013 and will \u2013 defend any translation choice.\u00a0 I know all it takes is one small, obscure rendering in a single manuscript, or even the idea that there could be such a reading of another language\u2019s words, to justify any translation.\u00a0 But half the time, when I read commentaries in our bulletins or other published materials, it seems as if the writer has to say something like \u2018the NAB doesn\u2019t really\u2026\u2019, or \u2018unlike the NAB\u2019s translation\u2026\u2019\u00a0 If you have to say that too often, it doesn\u2019t work.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Plus, as I\u2019ve said, it just reads bulky.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t flow.\u00a0 It\u2019s comparing rap music to\u00a0Mozart when you take some of the NAB\u2019s translations compared to others.\u00a0\u00a0It isn\u2019t, to say it any other way, a beautiful translation.\u00a0 Just like Nicholas Cage says in American Treasure<\/em>: People don\u2019t talk like that anymore (meaning the Declaration of Independence).\u00a0 No they don\u2019t.\u00a0 And that\u2019s a shame.\u00a0 But remembering that language is the tool with which we speak about the Divine, once in a while it should sound like people used to talk.\u00a0 And it should remind people that far from a burdensome mechanic with which we convey our thoughts, language should be at times pleasing to the eye and ear, especially when conveying truths about the most beautiful truth out there.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

So we\u2019ll see, but again, not expecting much, and likely will still prefer the RSV and its siblings.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
