A strange story from Reuters<\/a>.\u00a0 The Pope is basically saying the obvious, that no matter what theories happen to be coming down the pike, remember God is behind it all.\u00a0 And of course theories are theories are theories.\u00a0 They say if everyone who had sold something to someone based on\u00a0credit suddenly wanted their money, our economy would collapse (which may be what happened, I dunno).\u00a0 I often wonder if we stopped and looked at just how much of what we think is true is just a theory based on a theory that assumes another theory that was founded on a previous theory, just how shocked we would be.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

All the more reason not to chuck God out the window just because the latest scientific theory purports to explain how the magician did his trick.\u00a0 What struck me was why this\u00a0made it into a news story.\u00a0 What\u2019s the news?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Sure, it\u2019s from a message Pope Benedict gave on Thursday (or today in my neck of the woods).\u00a0 But there\u2019s really nothing big here.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t as if the Pope suddenly reversed course, or made some bold proclamation that it\u2019s time Christians believe in atheism or something.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

When I see stories like this that more or less make news about the fact that Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, I have to believe it\u2019s for some other reason than just telling us something most folks already know.\u00a0 My hunch?\u00a0 Just so the journalist could include this little segment that wrapped up the story:<\/p>\n

\u201cBenedict and his have predecessor John Paul been trying to shed the Church\u2019s image of being anti-science, a label that stuck when it condemned Galileo for teaching that the earth revolves around the sun, challenging the words of the Bible.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That would be John Paul II by the way.\u00a0 I love how they assume all of this \u2018science is OK\u2019 stuff is just an elaborate strategy to undo a former reality that wasn\u2019t that real.\u00a0 If anything, the journalist does well to point out that it was just a label that stuck, rather than an accurate appraisal of the historical\u00a0facts.\u00a0 Who knows, perhaps that\u2019s the biggest news in the story: journalist admits what most historians know, that the Church was not anti-science or anti-knowledge.\u00a0 That was just \u2018a label that stuck.\u2019\u00a0 For that alone, perhaps it was worth the print.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
