{"id":4622,"date":"2010-08-31T14:23:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-31T14:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/daffeythoughts\/2010\/08\/telling-the-wheat-from-the-chaff.html"},"modified":"2010-08-31T14:23:00","modified_gmt":"2010-08-31T14:23:00","slug":"telling-the-wheat-from-the-chaff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/daffeythoughts\/2010\/08\/telling-the-wheat-from-the-chaff.html","title":{"rendered":"Telling the wheat from the chaff"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-size:85%\">Over at <strong><em>Catholic Hour<\/em><\/strong>, there is a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mycatholicfaithdelivered.com\/post\/Non-Sequitur.aspx\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-size:85%\">fun list of non <span id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\" class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">sequiturs<\/span> used against the Catholic faith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size:85%\">. I saw it posted on Mark Shea\u2019s blog, and proceeded to take a look. Yes, some of the arguments I\u2019ve heard against Catholicism are there, and sometimes they can be rather goofy. But fact is, not all of the arguments I\u2019ve heard are presented as they are in the list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:85%\">Take for instance #2:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><em>(2) \u201cFr. X sexually abused a minor.\u201d<br>Therefore: \u201cThe Catholic Church is evil. (And all priests are perverts.)\u201d<\/em> <\/span><br><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size:85%\">Sure, for those who would make such a claim, it is a ridiculous non <span id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\" class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">sequitur<\/span>.  And there are those who seem to make those leaps, for whatever reason (John <span id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\" class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">Landis<\/span>, I\u2019ve got my eyes on you!).  But even though some would make such ridiculous statements as \u2018priest abuses child, Church is evil\u2019, it doesn\u2019t take away from the fact that most who are critical of the abuse crisis, those who are fair and understanding and not out with an anti-Catholic axe to grind, are in fact concerned about much more than that.  It isn\u2019t the bad priest = evil Church argument, it\u2019s the systemic abuse followed by systemic cover up and a geologically slow response when compared to the swiftness of other responses to other things high on the Church\u2019s priority list, that makes them scratch their heads.  Sometimes it even makes them question the Church\u2019s moral authority to lead and proclaim the Truth. <\/span><br><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size:85%\">I\u2019m not saying they should, nor am I dismissing those who obviously appear to care not one lick about abused children beyond simply sticking it to the Church.  But we can\u2019t just guffaw over all the non <span id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\" class=\"blsp-spelling-error\">sequiturs<\/span>  while avoiding the legitimate concerns about a serious and legitimate problem that continues even now in the Church today.   <\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over at Catholic Hour, there is a fun list of non sequiturs used against the Catholic faith.
