In this joint declaration<\/a>. \u00a0It appears that Shia Muslims and Catholic leaders signed a joint declaration rejecting weapons of mass destruction, terrorism, and extremism. \u00a0As well as indiscriminate sanctions. \u00a0 That\u2019s fine. \u00a0I usually assume most people want good and not bad. \u00a0Most don\u2019t want to hurt people. \u00a0Most don\u2019t want carnage and death and destruction.<\/p>\n

And yet, what most people want as often as not isn\u2019t what drives history. \u00a0Many of those sad periods we study either began with, or were dominated by, that rather vocal minority. \u00a0Those squeaky wheels. \u00a0Sometimes that vocal minority was right. \u00a0Sometimes it wasn\u2019t. \u00a0But it\u2019s those squeaky wheels who more often than not get the grease, and sometimes get the power to do something about it.<\/p>\n

I have no doubt that most Muslims condemn terrorism. \u00a0Whenever some Muslim leader decries terrorist attacks, people act as if some grand revelation has been made about what Muslims really think. \u00a0I don\u2019t know the total numbers, but a casual glance at the news over the last few years suggests that most victims of Islamic terrorism have been Muslim. \u00a0So that makes sense that Muslims would, on the whole, condemn something that kills them as much, if not more, than anyone else.<\/p>\n

But as common sense as it is, differences still remain. \u00a0Not just theological differences. \u00a0I\u2019ve often compared it to a football game between rivals, like Ohio State and Michigan. \u00a0Most people want a fair game. \u00a0Most people want a safe game. \u00a0Most people want a good game. \u00a0But everyone wants their team to win, not the other team. \u00a0Another thing that history shows us is that, eventually, there comes a time when people want their side to have the most points at the end of the game. \u00a0And it\u2019s better to admit it now, than hope against hope this time it doesn\u2019t matter and everyone just wants to sit around and sing Imagine<\/em>. \u00a0That\u2019s when those loud voices suddenly get up and declare that if nobody else is going to help the team win, they\u2019ll do it. \u00a0All we need to do is give them a little more power, or at least look the other way\u00a0while they rack up the points.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
